Fort Recovery teams win double-headers (04/26/04)

Fort Recovery Roundup

Last week started with both Fort Recovery teams winning their Midwest Athletic Conference openers. It ended with them sweeping a pair of double-headers Saturday.

The Indian softball team topped the Franklin Monroe Jets 9-2 and 11-1. The Tribe baseball team edged the Botkins Trojans twice, 2-0 and 9-7.

The Fort Recovery softball team — which has now won five in a row — used one big inning in each game to put the Jets away.

It scored six times in the fourth inning of the first game, building an insurmountable 8-0 lead. In the second contest it scored 10 times in the third inning for the 11-1 lead, and both teams went scoreless the rest of the way.

Brenda Rindler had the outstanding offensive effort of the day, finishing 3-for-4 with five RBIs in the second game. She doubled and also scored once.

Rindler was also 3-for-4 in the first game with a pair of runs scored.

Joscie Kaup and Krystal Rammel also had two hits apiece in the second game. Kaup, Lisa Grisez and Ciera Rammel each scored two runs.

Julie Smith aided Rindler in the first game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double. She scored twice and drove in two runs.

Renee Evers had two hits and two RBIs, and Krystal Rammel scored a pair of runs.

Alyssa Tobe was the winning pitcher in game one as she tossed a one-hitter. It was the second straight Tribe one-hitter, combined with Smith’s effort against Marion Local Friday night.

Tobe gave up two runs — one earned — as she went the distance. She struck out seven and walked five.

Smith won the second game, allowing one run on four hits in six innings. She struck out six and walked one.

Tiff Gaerke struck out a pair of batters in one inning of scoreless relief.

The Tribe baseball team was involved in a couple of much closer games, but still came away with a pair of victories.

It scored the only two runs of the first game in the third inning to back up a stellar pitching performance by Todd Post. It then jumped on Botkins with six first-inning runs in the second game and held off the Trojans’ comeback try in the final three innings.

Post blanked Botkins with a three-hitter in the first game. He struck out six batters while walking three.

Greg Faller backed him up with a double, a run and an RBI. Dusty Guggenbiller went 2-for-3 with a double, and Post scored a run.

Nick Wehrkamp powered the Indians’ offense in the second contest, finishing 2-for-3 with a double. He drove in two runs, scored twice and stole a base.

Post and Steve Trobridge added two hits apiece, and Guggenbiller had two runs and two RBIs. Dusty Tobe notched a trio of RBIs, and Faller scored twice.

Nick Wehrkamp took the game-two win in relief, tossing 12/3 scoreless innings. He did not allow a hit while striking out three and walking one.

Guggenbiller started and allowed three runs in 41/3 innings, and Dan Heitkamp gave up four runs in one inning of relief.

The softball team (11-4) will visit New Bremen Thursday at 5 p.m., and the baseball team (6-9) will play at St. Johns Tuesday at 5 p.m.

FR JV still winless

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity baseball team put up double-digit runs in both of its games but still remained winless after a pair of losses to the Botkins Trojans. The Indians let a 14-12 lead slip away in the ninth inning of game one to lose 15-14, and went on to drop the second game 15-10.

The Tribe trailed 10-0 in the first game, but scored 10 times in the top of the fifth inning to tie it. After falling behind 12-10 it scored two more times in the top of the seventh to tie it and twice in the top of the ninth for the lead.

However, the Trojans scored three times in their final at-bat for the win.

Fort Recovery (0-9) allowed nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning in game two and never fully recovered.

Scott Hein took the game-one defeat, allowing six runs — three earned — on nine hits in six innings. He walked seven and struck out one.

Eric Weitzel was the lone Indian to notch a pair of hits, one of which was a triple. He drove in three runs and scored once.

Adding two runs apiece for the Tribe as it took advantage of 17 walks were Kevin Schoenherr, Craig Garman, Scott Hein, Jordan Staugler and John Hart.

Craig Garman was the losing pitcher in game two, allowing 11 runs — seven earned — in 32/3 innings. He gave up nine hits and two walks while striking out three batters.

Jesse Fortkamp aided him offensively with a pair of doubles in a 4-for-5 game. He scored three times and stole a base.

David Schmidt finished 4-for-4, Weitzel had a double, and Hein and Staugler each scored twice.[[In-content Ad]]
