Fort Recovery wins MAC finale

NEW BREMEN, Ohio - A win Monday capped the Indians' best Midwest Athletic Conference effort in five years. They will hope to add a sectional title today.

The Fort Recovery High School softball team, which plays Coldwater in today's Division III sectional championship game at Elida, scored three times in the sixth inning Monday on the way to a 4-1 victory over the New Bremen Cardinals.

Shelby Brunswick paced the offense for the Indians (11-13) by going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a run and a stolen base. Andi Sutter added a hit, a run and an RBI, and Carly Staugler had two hits.

Sutter picked up the win as she struck out five batters in seven innings. She gave up five hits and did not allow a walk. The only run against her was unearned.

Fort Recovery finished 4-3 in the MAC, its best mark since winning the league title in 2005.

The Tribe junior varsity team also defeated New Bremen Monday, 8-4.

WJ girls stay unbeaten

GASTON - The West Jay Middle School girls track team is perfect. And the boys aren't far behind.

The Eagle girls improved to 8-0 Monday with a 55-45 victory over host Wes-Del, and the boys picked up a 66-34 victory.

Ciera Barcus picked up another pair of wins for the WJMS girls, taking first place in the high jump at 4 feet, 3 inches. She was also victorious in the long jump.

Sean Winget earned victories in the 100-meter dash and 200 dash for the boys team, which is now 7-1. He also contributed to the Eagles' win in the 4x100 relay.

Other individual victories for the girls team came from Miranda Gerber (100 dash), Morgan Brown (400 dash), Emily Walter (800 run) and Tyra Westlake (shot put). Winning events for the boys team were Dustin Smith (110 hurdles), Andrew Eley (shot put), Dan Walter (discus) and Daniel Miller (high jump).

Shreve, Houck lead

Zane Shreve and Malarie Houck combined for seven victories and Amber Huelskamp set a school record in leading the East Jay track teams to victories over Driver (Winchester) Monday.

Shreve won four events as the boys team eked out a 53-47 win, and Houck picked up three victories as the girls team rolled to an 81-19 triumph.

Huelskamp's record came in the 400-meter dash as she posted a time of 1 minute, 5.3 seconds.

Shreve swept the jumps with leaps of 15 feet, 9 ¼ inches in the long jump and 5 feet, 3 inches in the high jump. He was also first in the hurdles in 18.08 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 26.5

Houck won three of the same events, posting times of 16.9 in the hurdles and 28.1 in the 200 dash. She was first in the long jump at 13 feet, 9 ½ inches.

Adding wins for the boys team were Jalen Ryder (1,600 run) and Alex Abbott (800 run). Other victories for the girls team came from Tasya Smith (100 dash), Abigail Johnson (1,600 run), Emi Minnich (800 run) and Rachel Vogler (discus).[[In-content Ad]]
