Seven candidates in running as FR superintendent

Fort Recovery School Board members are one step closer to finding a replacement for departing Superintendent Patrick Niekamp.

Kathleen D. LaSota, the Deputy Director of Search Services and Board Development with the Ohio School Boards Association, attended an executive session of the board on Wednesday and presented board members with a list of 18 candidates for the superintendent’s position.

During its executive session, the board selected eight applicants to bring in for the first round of interviews that will take place on Oct. 27-28. LaSota said this morning that one of the eight candidates dropped out of the running this morning because of personal reasons.

“The board was excited about the quality of candidates that applied for the position,” LaSota said this morning. “We did a paper screening (Wednesday) and discussed strengths and weaknesses, and we came to a consensus on the candidates the board thought would be the best fit.”

After the board interviews the seven prospects early next week, it will select two or three finalists that will be brought in for a second round of interviews in the first two weeks of November.

“Typically, school boards will bring back two or three as a finalist,” LaSota said. “There are still a lot of decisions to be made ... they hope to have their next superintendent selected by the middle of November.”

Niekamp announced late in the summer that he was leaving the district at the end of December to become the county superintendent for the Auglaize County Educational Service Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio.

“It’s really important to note that the board felt it a priority to involve community members and faculty,” she said. LaSota spent a day in Fort Recovery in late September to speak with school employees and community members in order to establish a profile of the candidate that would best fit the school system. “I think it’s really going to make the decision a better one all around.”
