Fort softball defeats Jets (05/09/05)

SIDNEY, Ohio — The Fort Recovery softball team improved to 10-7 Friday night with a 5-3 victory over the Fairlawn Jets.

The Tribe broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the fourth inning, and added two in the fifth. Fairlawn cut the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the squads traded runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Krystal Rammel paced the Tribe by going 3-for-4 with a double. She also drove in a run.

Kristen Schwieterman added a pair of hits, and Ciera Rammel and Brenda Rindler each had a single, a run and an RBI. Tiff Gaerke had a run and an RBI, and Renee Evers and Megan Wenning each scored once.

Gaerke earned the win as she allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings. She struck out five and walked two.

Host SA places third

BERNE — The Starfire girls and boys track teams each placed third Friday night as they hosted the South Adams Invitational.

The girls team had 98.5 points to place behind Bellmont (113.5) and Adams Central (109), while the boys scored 93 to finish behind Bellmont (148) and Heritage (103).

Katie Weaver was the dominant female athlete of the meet, picking up three titles for the Starfires.

She was first in the 100-meter dash in (13.14), the 200 dash in 27.46 and the long jump at 15 feet, 11.5 inches.

Heath Lehman won a pair of titles for the boys team. He took the 1,600 run in 4:27.48 and the 3,200 run in 10:14.

Johnson wins two

HARTFORD CITY — Alyssa Johnson won a pair of titles Friday night as the Jay County girls track team scored 99 points to finish second at the Blackford Invitational. The host Bruins were first with 118 points.

The Patriot boys had one first-place finish and were fourth with 53 points behind New Haven (169), Blackford (111.5) and Anderson Highland (104.5).

Johnson won the two longest individual races of the evening to earn half of the Jay County wins on the night. She was first in the 1,600-meter run in 5-minutes, 29 seconds and the 3,200 run in 11:52.

Jill Roughia had the other win for the girls team in the 800 run with a time of 2:28.

Mark Kelly won the boys high jump title by six inches as he cleared the bar at six feet, two inches.

Optimist blasts REMC

PORTLAND — Portland Optimist improved to 2-0 to start the Portland Junior League Minor League softball season Friday night with a 30-8 trouncing of Jay County REMC.

Mariah Hornaday paced the Optimist domination as she racked up four hits, including a triple. She also scored five times.

Sarah Davenport had three hits, including a triple, and four runs, and Selena McKibben added three hits, including a double, and four runs. Lexie Gierhart and Katie Snyder each had three hits and three runs.

Latrisha McEwen paced REMC with a double and a pair of runs scored.

In the only other game on the evening AmeriCare defeated Indoor Comfort by Vance 8-1. Danielle Wellman had three hits, including a double, and three runs, and Brittany Manor posted four hits, including a double, and two runs.

Abby Freyburger had the only hit, and Jordan McMillan scored the lone run for Vance.[[In-content Ad]]
