Fort student wins Mercer County bee (02/09/07)

Abby Backs, a seventh grader at Fort Recovery Middle School was named the winner of the 2007 Mercer County Spelling Bee held Monday in the Wright State University Lake Campus auditorium.

She is the daughter of Ray and Chris Backs.

Twenty-five participants from Mercer County schools took part in the spelling bee.

The winning word Abby spelled correctly was "diminutive."

First runner-up was Derek Broering, a sixth grader from St. Henry Middle School and second runner-up was Arliss Nicholson, a seventh-grader at Coldwater Junior High school.

These three will represent the Mercer County schools at the regional bee set for March 10 in Lima. The regional winner will advanced to the national competition to be held in Washington D.C. in May.

Students "win"

Bloomfield Elementary School staff members have nominated students for "win with lifeskills" for January.

They are Willow Blowers, Cadence Bridges, Macy Chrisman, Andrew Graber, Graham Haines, Matthew Hilty, Sarah Hilty, Caleb Manor, Rachel Miller, Gerard Muhlenkamp, Tucker Pearson, Carolyn Reinhart, Daniel Swartzentruber, Elizabeth Swartzentruber, David Troyer, and Jaclyn VanCise.

Named to dean's list

Wabash College Dean Gary Phillips has announced that four Portland students are on the dean's list for the fall 2006 semester.

They are Joshua Eal, a junior, and son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Eal, 322 S. Meridian St., Portland; David Johnston, a junior and son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Johnston, 1532 East Ind. 26, Portland; Alex Loucks, a junior, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ramon Loucks, 1755 South Blaine Pike, Portland, and Kyle Weaver, a senior and son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Weaver, 935 Sandy Hollow Lane, Portland.

They are among the 277 dean's list students who maintained a 3.5 grade point average or better.

Anderson University has announced its dean's list for the spring semester of the 2005-06 academic year.

Local students named to the list were Lauren Elizabeth Budde, Rachel Kathryn McKee, and Nicole Marie VanSkyock, all Portland.

Brittany Bauman, Bryant, a nursing student at the University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester.

Katie Alberson, daughter of Jeff and Robin Alberson, Portland, has received recognition on the national dean's list for the fall semester of the 2006-07 academic year at Indiana Wesleyan University.

She is majoring in business.

Bee winner

Dylan B. Brotherton, a fifth grader, was recently named the spelling bee winner at Redkey Elementary School. He is the son of Randall and Carrie Brotherton, Redkey.

Morgan M. Brown, a fourth grader and daughter of Michael and Bonnie Brown, was named the runner up.

Dayne Byrge, a fifth grader, was named the spelling bee champion at Westlawn Elementary School in Dunkirk. He is the son of Dale and Layna Byrge, Dunkirk.

Gregory Davis, son of Angela Fish, Dunkirk, was named the runner-up.

Choir member

Jessica Brock, Portland, is a member of the Ball State University Choral Union.

The union is an approximately 100-member ensemble open to any Ball State student and performs a repertoire of folk music, multicultural pieces, and show tunes. The group performs in four campus concerts each year.

Brock is a freshman majoring in secondary education and is the daughter of Christina Parroh, Portland.

Poetry night set

The Randolph County Art Association's seventh annual poetry night is set for Thursday at the Historical Depot in Union City.

The event begins at 7 p.m.

There is a $2 fee for adults, but students are admitted free.

The depot is located near the railroad tracks on Howard Street.

Fiber Fest and Spin-In

Jay County Visitor and Tourism Bureau will again sponsor the Fiber Fest and Spin-In March 8 through 10 at Jay County Fairgrounds' 4-H Building.

The event, devoted to the fiber arts, will feature spinning, weaving, quilting, rug hooking, stained glass and basket weaving.

An educational day will be Friday, March 9, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be spinners, sheep shearing, hands-on felt making, stained glass and basket weaving demonstrations. Each child will receive a wool sample.
