Fort students honored by board (6/9/04)

FORT RECOVERY — Middle school student council members here deserved to toot their own horn at the school board meeting Tuesday.
Three student council members reviewed numerous activities the group completed and donations the group made to the middle school and area organizations during the 2003-04 school year. These activities included raising money for the Heart Association of Dayton in December, visiting nursing home residents in Celina, Ohio and Coldwater, Ohio for Valentine’s Day and sending flowers to retired middle school teachers.
Student council sponsor Kathy Jutte told the board Tuesday that council members meet twice a month for 15 minutes during the school year and once during the summer.
Also Tuesday, the student council presented board members with donations of $500 for the middle school track team and $700 to go towards the $1,200 lighting project for the flag pole at the middle school.
In addition Tuesday, board members:
•Recognized the Fort Recovery Parent Teacher Organization for its $7,515.50 donation to the elementary building fund, the library fund and the middle school activity fund.
•Heard a yearly update from Fort Recovery High School FFA advisor Michael Gower. He reported that 132 high school students have signed up for FFA in the 2004-05 school year. This number is up from membership of 117 in the 2003-04 school year.
•Heard high school principal Ed Snyder report that students committed vandalism at the school following graduation on May 23.
“I am working with (Fort Recovery police officer Maggie Hartings) to investigate this incident,” Snyder told the board, adding that a tree was cut down and grass was damaged on high school property. “I just really hated the see that.”
•Tabled approval of permanent appropriations for fiscal year 2004.
•Approved continued participation in the Federal Free and Reduced Price Lunch Program for the upcoming school year.
•Approved the hiring of 14 summer school teachers.
•Voted to transfer $5,000 to the student intervention fund from the general fund.
•Announced the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m. (Ohio time).
•Authorized continued membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the high and middle schools in the upcoming school year.[[In-content Ad]]
