Fort takes first defeat

KETTERING, Ohio — Walnut Ridge was expected to be the Indians’ strongest opponent of the year. It was.
The Scots, ranked 10th in Division I, limited the Division IV No. 2 Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team to 21 percent shooting Saturday. The Tribe never led after the opening period, suffering its first loss of the year 46-34 at the Flyin’ to the Hoop invitational.
FRHS (9-1) led on a few occasions in the opening quarter, but fell behind by 10 at the half and could not recover. It closed the gap to five points with less than a minute remaining before Walnut Ridge (10-0) pulled away for the final margin.
Wade Gelhaus paced the Indians with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Elijah Kahlig added 10 points. Jared Kahlig totaled seven points and eight boards.
Isaiah Brooks powered the Scots with 12 points, hitting all of his four 3-point attempts. Alassane Kah added 10 points and six rebounds.

JC wrestlers fifth
GARRETT — The Jay County wrestling team scored 141 points Saturday to finished fifth at the 10-team Garrett Invitational.
The Patriots finished one point ahead of sixth-place Norwell and 21 behind the fourth-place host Railroaders. DeKalb won the event with 232 points ahead of Bishop Dwenger (216) and East Noble (205).
Eric Hemmelgarn, a sophomore, brought home the lone championship for JCHS, turning in a perfect day in the 285-pound weight class. Nick Leonhard was the runner-up at 160 pounds, and Kyle Garringer took second place at 195.
Alex Abbott (106), Austin Bentz (138) and Jesse Finnerty (145) each finished fourth, and Brentt Lewis (182) placed fifth.

Patriot girls fall
CONNERSVILLE — Christian Goban’s free throws with 10 seconds left provided the game-tying and game-winning points for the Connersville Spartans as they edged the Jay County girls basketball team 31-30.
The Patriots led by two at the half, were up by as many as eight and had 28-22 advantage after a hoop by LeAnn Horn with 3:28 to play before Connersville finished the game on a 8-2 run. Tierra Huntsman turned in a five-point play — she hit a 3-pointer, was fouled on the floor after the shot and then cashed in a 1-and-1 free-throw opportunity — to key the comeback.
LeAnn Horn led Jay County (10-5) with 10 points. Maria Murphy and Kassi Hemmelgarn each added seven.
Huntsman powered the Spartans with 21 points, and Goban added four.
In the junior varsity game, the Patriots shut out Connersville in the first and third quarters on the way to a 27-17 victory. Katlin Petro racked up 15 points for JCHS (13-2) and Bre McIntire added six points.

SA slams Raiders
BERNE — South Adams’ wrestling team destroyed the Southern Wells Raiders Friday night, winning six out of seven contested matches by pin in a 78-6 victory.
Klayton Hinshaw (195) scored the fastest of the pins for the Starfires, picking up his 20th win of the year in just 31 seconds. Sawyer Miller (106), Austin Grabau (132) and Charlie Hirschy (152) also added first-period pins.
Other pins came from Boaz Marbach (120) and Eric Pimentel (126), and South Adams also benefited from six forfeits.
The Starfires, who will defend their Allen County Athletic Conference Tournament title on Saturday, finished the regular season at 19-3.

Chiefs go 1-2
DECATUR — The East Jay Middle School wrestling team went 1-2 at Saturday’s Bellmont Quad with its lone victory coming by a 79-17 score over Blackhawk Christian. The Chiefs fell 56-36 to Muncie Wilson and 69-16 to the host Braves.
Levi Hummel was the only EJMS wrestlers to turn in a perfect day, finishing with a pair of pins on the way to a 3-0 record at 147 pounds. Davis Anderson (82), Mitchell Bruggeman (112), Graham Haines (117) and Matt Blackford (130) also added two pins apiece as they finished at 2-1.
Also going 2-1 on the day were Ivan Hemmelgarn (97) and Nick Lairson (154).[[In-content Ad]]
