Fort to give out awards

FORT RECOVERY — Three local residents will be among those honored during the Fort Recovery Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year/Hall of Fame awards banquet on Sunday, March 11 in the auditeria at Fort Recovery Elementary/Middle School.
Alice Gaerke, who has volunteered to photograph events at schools, churches and community events, will be honored as the citizen of the year.
Randy Diller and Mike Laux will also be given Hall of Fame awards during the event.
Others to be honored include:
•Fort Recovery VFW Post 6515 — Outstanding Community Service Award.
•Lori Collins — Most improved residential property.
•Kaup Pharmacy — Most improved commercial property.
•Dr. Jim Vaughn — Community beautification award.
Tickets for the banquet are available at local banks, Fort Recovery Insurance Agency or by calling (419) 375-2530.
New director
Since moving to Geneva several years ago, Pam Krause has been involved with a variety of community events.
That isn’t likely to slow down, as she was introduced recently as the new director of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce.
Krause will staff the chamber’s downtown office from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Krause has also served with Geneva Proud and the South Adams Trail Group Inc.
Still growing
A Berne furniture-maker is halfway through a major four-phase expansion.
Two additions completed in 2011 with an invest of $3 million have Smith Brothers of Berne looking forward o the future.
Company president Steve Lehman told The Tri-Weekly (Berne) recently that the addition have brought the firm’s square footage to about 300,000. The company now employs 285 employees.
The final two phases of the expansion plan will utilize the former Berne Furniture plant.
Meeting set
The Blackford County Economic Development Corporation will hold its annual meeting/dinner on Tuesday, March 13.
The event will be held at Lake Placid Conference Center, 397 S. 200 East, Hartford City.
Michael Hicks, an economist from Ball State University, will be the featured speaker.

Rejected
A request by American Electric Power to increase rates for schools and small businesses was rejected this week by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
The decision followed weeks of comments opposing the increases that took affect in December and reverses a precious approval.The commission ordered Columbus, Ohio-based AEP to return its rates to levels in place before the increase.
Kentucky holiday
The operators of Holiday World theme park in Santa Claus, Ind., have won a 50-year lease to operate the former Kentucky Kingdom amusement park in Louisville.
The newly-named Bluegrass Boardwalk at Kentucky Kingdom is scheduled to re-open in May 2013.
Terms of the lease include a base rent of $400,000, with the annual amount escalating to $1 million by 2016.
Earnings up
Saint-Gobain, parent company of Dunkirk’s Verallia glass container plant, posted a sharp rise in earnings in 2011.
The company reported Friday it had sales of 42,116,000 Euros and net income of 1,284,000 Euros. That’s a jump of 5 percent in sales and 13.7 percent in net income.
Verallia saw 3 percent growth for the year, the company reported.
Record numbers
Franklin Electric Co. set records for sales and earnings during 2011, the company reported this week.
The Bluffton company, which makes submersible electric motors and pumping systems, had earnings of $63.1 million, or $2.65 cents per fully diluted share. Those figures were a 62 percent increase over 2010 figures.
Net sales were $821.1 in 2011, up 15 percent over the previous year.
In the fourth quarter of the year, Franklin Electric had earnings of $11.5 million.
Growing
An Ossian manufacturer hopes to add as many as 70 jobs over the next two years.
Haven Manufacturing Indiana Inc., 6935 Ind. 1, makes parts for the health care, transportation and aerospace sectors.
An investment of $2.34 million in new equipment, aided by state tax credits and training grants, will assist in the project.
The jobs will pay $10 to $20 per hour. The company currently employs 34.
Joins hospice
Angie Claypool, Warren, has joined State of the Heart Hospice as a primary nurse. Claypool will work out of the not-for-profit’s Portland office.
Claypool earned her R.N., B.S.N. in 2008 and is currently pursuing a M.S.N. as a Family Nurse Practicioner with a focus on hospice care.

Officials in Blackford County confirmed recently that members of the private Blackford Golf Club are considering selling.
The club is located on the west side of Hartford City at 1605 W. Water St.
Rob Cleveland, executive director of Blackford County Economic Development Corporation, told The News-Times (Hartford City) this week that he has been working with two potential buyers of the golf club.[[In-content Ad]]
