Foundation awards grants
Taking Note
The Portland Foundation’s Women’s Giving Circle awarded two grants to Jay Community Center for projects focused on Overall Health and Fitness.
The organization awarded $1,000 to the “Get Fit” program for families in Jay County and $435 to pay a speaker for the upcoming “Lady’s Night” at JCC.
The Board of Trustees of The Portland Foundation approved grants for seven projects in Jay County for the second half of 2011.
Community and Family Services was awarded $2,000 for its Heartlite Energy Assistance program.
Jay County Historical Society was awarded $1,000 toward the purchase of new canopies and anchor kits for its annual Heritage Festival.
Jay County Robotics Club was awarded $813 toward the purchase of a robotics playing field and controller system.
John Jay Center for Learning was awarded $3,500 toward the purchase of materials for the C-3-Career-College-Connectioins program and $1,250 to help fund the Entrepreneur “Gathering Places” program.
The Salvation Army Jay County Service Extension was awarded $2,000 toward the Emergency Assistance program.
Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana was awarded $2,828 toward the purchase of food for the Tailgate Program.
Summer Teacher Creativity Mini-Grants were awarded to help cover the costs of learning experiences not covered by school budgets. The grants are funded by the Virgil and Josephine Thomas Educational Fund.
Rod Wolford, who teaches fifth grade at General Shanks Elementary School, was awarded $162 to purchase a year subscription to “Study Island.”
Kristine Wolford, who teaches third and fourth grade at Jay County Christian Academy, was awarded $199 to purchase the IXL Online Math program.
Brittany Bridges, who teaches vocational agriculture classes at Jay County High School, was awarded $250 to purchase “Beyond Question,” an interactive response device.
Rex Pinkerton, who teaches third grade at Judge Haynes Elementary School, was awarded $250 to purchase a wireless slate to be used with a Smart Board.

Museum Christmas
Christmas at the Jay County Historical Museum, 903 E. Main St., will be Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Trees, decorated by students from the Jay School Corporation and Jay County Christian Academy will be on display. Vote for a favorite with an item for the Helping Hand Food Bank.
There will also be vintage decorations, Department 56 Snow Villages and a nativity scene from General Shanks Elementary on display.
Christmas at the Museum will continue Monday through Friday, Dec. 30, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Arts Place programs
Classes for the second semester will begin Jan. 16 at Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St. in Portland.
MusicWorks offers individual instruction in violin, viola, cello, harp, woodwinds, brass, percussion, voice, guitar and piano.
Group instruction is available for Introduction to Violin, Distant Thunder Percussion Ensemble, Distant Rumble Percussion Ensemble, Eastern Breeze Flute Ensemble, Recorder Express (level one and level two), Guitar Heroes, Brassissimo! (brass ensemble), Brown Paper Sax (saxophone ensemble), Vox Altus (adult choir), and Community Band.
ArtWorks classes are available in Clay for Kids, Clay for Adults, Oil Painting, Works on Paper for Kids, Preserving Memories in Paperclay, Introduction to Watercolor, Watercolor for Adults and Drawing for Kids.

The following area student was recently named to the dean’s list for the fall quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute.
Clayton Eley, a senior, who is majoring in mechanical engineering. He is the son of Todd Eley and Paula Miller, both of Portland.
