CELINA, Ohio - Four Fort Recovery players, including three from the girls basketball team, were named to the All-District 8 Division IV teams Wednesday.

Senior Holly Stein was one of just 12 players to earn first-team honors from the District 8 Basketball Coaches Association. Her classmates Tiff Gaerke and Vicki Roessner were named to the second team, and Clint Tobe earned a spot on the boys second team.

Stein, who was sidelined by a foot injury for the final three games of the regular season, is among the area leaders in scoring (13.6 points per game), free-throw percentage (76.8), rebounding (6.9) and 3-pointers (20). Roessner is far-and-away the steals leader in Mercer County at an average of 4.06 per game while also dishing out 3.8 assists per contest, and Gaerke averages 6.8 rebounds per game.

Tobe, a junior, scores 14.1 points per game, averages 75 percent from the foul line and has made 27 3-pointers.

Chiefs close with win

Neither fog nor their opponents could keep the Chiefs down.

The East Jay Middle School wrestling team capped its season Wednesday, defeated Union City Westside 56-33. The team finished with an 11-2 record.

Chandler Stout started a run of four straight victories, all by pin, which keyed the Chiefs' victory. He won his 105-pound match just before the first-period buzzer in 1-minute, 56 seconds.

Nick Leonhard (110) followed with a pin in 2:36, Dyllan Derrickson (115) finished off his match in 1:40 and Kyle Davidson (120) scored the quick pin of the night in just 12 seconds.

Andre Duke (145) eked out a 4-2 decision, and Justin Wygant (152) won by a 16-1 technical fall.

Ethan Bost (225), Tanner Schlicter (115) and Brandon Poore (90) also won matched for the junior varsity team.

Qualified at Crossroads

LAFAYETTE - The Gym City Gliders had a big weekend at the Crossroads of Champions meet Saturday and Sunday as 14 team members have now qualified for state competition.

Lizzy Schoenlein led the group as she finished as the runner-up in a pair of events. She scored an 8.9 on the 7-year-old Level 5 balance beam and an 8.75 on the uneven bars to place second.

Others who qualified for the Level 5 state meet March 17-18 at New Castle were Vanessa Miller, Miranda Hibbard, Morgan Brown, Malorie Houck and Hannah McKissick.

Qualifying for the March 10-11 Level 4 state meet in Kokomo were Hannah Graft, Courtney Miles, Kelly Graft, Alexis Murrell, Kristen Simons and Hannah Kaup. And reaching the state meet for Level 7 March 24-25 in Madison were Katie Snyder and Kristen Ainsworth.

Brown gave the Gliders their only other top-three finish, placing second with a 9.05 on the bars.

The team also competed in Indianapolis in the Judge's Cup Jan. 27-28 and The Great Race Jan. 13-14. Miller won the floor with an 8.85 at the Judge's Cup, and Houck was the top finisher at The Great Race with a second-place 8.85 on the bars.

Two Starfires honored

LEO - Two South Adams athletes were honored Wednesday as the Allen County Athletic Conference announced its all-conference teams.

Kayla Coblentz was named to the All-ACAC first team. Garrett had the most first-teamers with three, followed by Heritage and Leo with two apiece.

Andrea Moser was a second-team selection.

Karate champs

Students from Portland's Patriot Bushi-Kai Karate have taken part in several competitions in recent months.

Norma Walters had an outstanding effort in action Feb. 3 at East Jay Middle School. She finished first in sparring, musical forms, kata and soft swords.

Kyle Kilsby added top efforts in point sparring and swords, and Jason Kilsby finished first in soft sword.

During competition in December Emma Christal picked up a first-place effort in soft sword, and Bronson Hunt placed first in point fighting.[[In-content Ad]]
