Four go deep in Patriot wins (05/22/06)

JCHS baseball

It was a home-run happy weekend for the Jay County baseball team.

The Patriots whacked six home runs in three games Friday and Saturday, winning all of them to improve to 12-9. They defeated the Wabash Apaches 15-10 and 13-3 Saturday following a 4-2 win over the Elwood Panthers Friday.

Sophomore Josh Ludy got the home-run train rolling Friday, blasting a three-run home run as Jay County sent a message to the Panthers. The teams will play again in the first game of the Class 3A Blackford sectional on Memorial Day. Ludy also had a single in the victory.

Tony McCowan had two hits, and Josh Selvey added a run and an RBI.

Josh Atkinson was the winning pitcher, giving up two runs — one earned — on just two hits and a walk. He struck out six batters.

Seniors John Retter and Josh Shatto and sophomore Luke Goetz took over the long-ball duties in the opener against Wabash. The Apaches pulled ahead at 10-9 with five runs in the top of the fifth inning, but Jay County immediately responded with six in the bottom of the frame.

Goetz filled up the stat book, going 2-for-3 with his homer, a double, three runs, three RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. Shatto was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs.

Casey Waters added two hits and two runs.

Tom McCowan tossed one inning in relief of Michael Jobe for the win. He gave up one unearned run on one hit and one walk.

Ludy reclaimed the big bat in the final game of the weekend, blasting a pair of home runs in the second victory over Wabash. He drove in five runs and scored three times.

Retter, Jobe and Andy Hughes added two hits and two runs apiece.

Shatto silenced the Apache offense, giving up just one earned run as he improve to 6-1. He allowed six hits and two walks while striking out three.
