Four homers power Starfire victory

PONETO - Bookend big innings keyed the South Adams High School baseball team Monday in a 17-2 throttling of the host Southern Wells Raiders.

South Adams blasted four home runs, including a three-run shot by Caleb Sprunger and a two-run bomb from Dustin Wanner in its eight-run seventh inning. John Striker hit a two-run shot in the first and Taylor LeFever added a solo homer in the fourth inning.

Caleb Sprunger and Gabe Sprunger each added doubles in the victory.

Taylor Smith earned the win as he struck out 11 batters in six innings. He allowed two runs - one earned - on one hit and two walks.

FR softball falls

FORT RECOVERY - Managing just one hit, the Fort Recovery softball team fell 10-0 in five innings to the Parkway Panthers Monday in its Midwest Athletic Conference opener.

Parkway (4-4, 1-0 MAC) posted five runs in the opening inning and three more in the second.

Andi Sutter took the loss, although just two of the 10 runs against her were earned.

She gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out one.

Carly Staugler had the only hit for the Indians (7-4, 0-1 MAC), and Josie Guggenbiller drew a walk.

Waters wins first

SALA BAGANZA, Italy - Jay County High School graduate Mitch Waters won his first start for the Sala Baganza Baseball Club Sunday.

Waters, who graduated from JCHS in 2002 and pitched at Ancilla College and Manchester College, struck out four batters in six innings in an 11-1 victory over Acotel Urbe Roma. He gave up just one run on five hits and a walk in his Series A2 debut.

Houck 1st in 3

Malarie Houck earned three victories Monday in leading the East Jay Middle School girls track team to victory over visiting Fort Recovery and Union City Westside.

The EJMS girls scored 54.3 points to beat Westside (47.6) and Fort Recovery (24). In the boys competition, Union City finished first in front of the Indians (40) and the Chiefs (33).

Houck took the long jump by just an inch over teammate Kaitlin Hemmelgarn at 13 feet, 6 inches. She picked up easy wins in the hurdles in 18.3 seconds and the 200 dash in 22.4.

Abigail Johnson added a win in the 1,600 run, and Zane Shreve picked up the only victories for the East Jay boys in the hurdles, long jump and high jump.

Josh Pohl won the 1,600 run and the 800 run for the Fort Recovery boys, and Nick Rammel was first in the shot put. Haley Knapke won the girls discus for the Indians, and Alex Shelton won the 100 dash.[[In-content Ad]]
