FR opens at No. 2 in Division IV

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Indians’ goal this year is to win a state title.
Ohio’s poll voters believe they will be in the mix.
Fort Recovery earned the No. 2 ranking in Division IV in the first Associated Press high school boys basketball poll of the season released Monday.
The Tribe, which is 8-0 for the second straight season, earned 167 poll points to finish 60 behind top-ranked Berlin Hiland (20-0). Newark Catholic (8-1) finished third with 148 points followed by Africentric Early College and Villa Angela-St. Joseph.
Fort Recovery is coming off a big two-win weekend in which it knocked off Division III No. 6 Versailles, one of its main rivals for the Midwest Athletic Conference title, and Kalida. It will visit Coldwater Friday before traveling to Kettering Saturday to take on Division I No. 10 Walnut Ridge (7-0) as part of the Flyin’ to the Hoop invitational.

Snyder wins beam
FORT WAYNE — Katie Snyder was the only Patriot to place in the top three on any event Monday as the Jay County gymnastics team dropped a 103.35-97.65 decision to the host Carroll Chargers.
Snyder earned the Patriots’ lone victory with a 9.0 on the balance beam. She was second on the vault (9.1), floor exercise (8.9) and uneven bars (8.1).
Malarie Houck added fourth-place efforts on the vault (8.8) and beam (8.4).
Megan Fegler won the vault (9.25) and bars (8.4) to pace Carroll.
On Saturday, Jay County posted its best score of the season in a 98.025-86.45 victory over Richmond.
Snyder was first on the beam (9.175), vault (9.0) and floor (8.775), and second on the bars (98.35). Houck finished second on the vault (8.7) and beam (8.675), and third on the floor (8.1).

JC wrestlers 3-2
MONROE — Four wrestlers turned in undefeated records Saturday as Jay County posted a 3-2 record at the Adams Central Duals.
Alex Abbott (106), Nick Leonhard (160), Kyle Garringer (195) and Eric Hemmelgarn (285) were all perfect as the Patriots defeated Norwell 40-39, Bluffton 66-24 and Southwood 55-21. JCHS fell 45-31 to Brownsburg and 54-27 to Bishop Dwenger.
Hemmelgarn, who went 4-0, avenged a defeat from the East Central Indiana Classic by knocking off Norwell’s Kyle Short 2-0 to secure the team victory. Abbott, Leonhard and Garringer all finished 5-0.
Austin Bentz (138) and Nick Spahr (220) added 3-2 marks as the Patriots pushed their record to 20-5.

Tribe freshmen split
FORT RECOVERY — Haley Knapke and Kara Jutte each scored in double figures Monday as the Fort Recovery freshman girls basketball team held off the Coldwater Cavaliers 31-30. The Tribe boys fell 32-21.
Knapke led the FRHS girls (2-5) to their second straight win with 11 points. Jutte added 10 points for the Indians, who were up by three after three quarters.
Alex Schoen had nine points and seven rebounds for the Fort Recovery boys (3-4). Evan Schoen scored four points.[[In-content Ad]]
