FR spikers to Cavaliers in regular season finale (10/17/03)

Local Roundup

The momentum is back.

The Fort Recovery volleyball team finished its regular season Thursday with a second straight win, defeating the Midwest Athletic Conference rival Coldwater Cavaliers 15-3, 17-15. The Indians head to tournament play Saturday against the New Knoxville Rangers with a 15-7 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the MAC.

The Tribe will play New Knoxville in first-round sectional action at New Bremen Saturday at 1 p.m., with a likely rematch against the No. 1 St. Henry Redskins to come later in the day. St. Henry defeated Fort Recovery in a tight match less than two weeks ago, 17-15, 16-14.

Seniors Joscie Kaup and Briget Metzger were once more the catalysts in Thursday’s victory over the Cavaliers.

Kaup put up 20 assists, while also finishing with eight points and a team-best 12 digs. Metzger notched a pair of team highs with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Julie Grube scored nine points, and Jennalee Post followed with eight. Krystal Rammel slammed seven kills, and Renee Schmackers added seven digs.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team forced a third game, but couldn’t finish off Coldwater in a 15-9, 4-15, 15-12 defeat.

Julie Link racked up nine kills, nine points and 14 digs for the Indians (17-5). Kelly Link had eight kills and eight points, and Kristi Westgerdes notched eight kills and four blocks.

Ciera Rammel put up 14 assists, and Vicki Roessner had 12. Kristen Schiweterman finished with 21 digs.

Stars lose a long one

A long night ended in a rough way for the South Adams volleyball team.

The Starfires forced the fifth and final game well beyond the required 15 points, but couldn’t finish off a victory in a 19-21, 21-7, 21-19, 18-21, 20-18 loss to the Huntington North Vikings Thursday.

Kelly Mertz had a team-high 16 kills as the Starfires rallied from a 2-1 deficit only to lose the heart-breaking fifth game. She also had 25 digs and three blocks.

LeeAnn Snyder followed Mertz with nine kills, and added a trio of blocks. Alyssa Miller had 30 assists and five blocks in the contest.

Robyn Habbeger picked up 20 digs and scored four aces, and Renee Neuenschwander had a pair of aces.

The junior varsity team lost to Huntington North 21-17, 21-23, 22-20. The freshman team lost 22-20, 21-10.

South Adams will take more than a week off before meeting Woodlan Saturday, Oct. 25 in the sectional semifinal round at Heritage at 11:30 a.m.

Jay freshmen win

The Jay County freshman football team overcame what could have been a couple of costly errors in a 20-16 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels Thursday. The win ended the Patriots season with a 4-2 record.

Jay County looked to be in control with a 14-0 lead, but it evaporated on two big Southside scores in the third quarter. The Rebels found the end zone on a punt return and an interception return to take a 16-14 lead.

But with five minutes left, the Patriots took the ball and decided to eat away the rest of the clock. They did so, with Kaleb Carpenter running in a 25-yard touchdown with just less than a minute left to play.

The defense held strong on Southside’s final try, with Travis Theurer turning in a sack on one of his several big plays during the last series.

The first of Jay County’s scores before the intermission came on a 6-yard run by quarterback Justin Florence, who replaced the departed Josh Johnson. Tom Smith ran in for a 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and Florence hit Carpenter for the two-point conversion.

Casey Waters had two fumble recoveries for the Patriot defense, and Smith and Ben Lyons each added one. Zach Chenoweth had an interception.

Chiefs down Blackford

East Jay’s eighth grade football team took care of Blackford in regulation Thursday. The seventh graders needed overtime.

In what was probably the most exciting double-header of the season for the Chiefs, Billy Wellman took care of the game-one heroics.

The seventh grade game ended regulation time in a scoreless tie, sending it into an overtime period in which each team gets the chance to score. Blackford got the ball first, putting six points on the board and the pressure on East Jay.

The Chiefs (4-2) shouldered the load, with Wellman scrambling in for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game. Then, with another overtime looming if the try failed, Wellman ran in the two-point conversion for the winning score.

Kaeleb Huntsman had an interception in the contest, and Vincent Vasquez, Lance Franklin and Adam Gray were each in on fumble recoveries.

The eighth grade team got by Blackford thanks to a fourth-quarter score by Justin Mann. He ran in on a 6-yard quarterback option.

Mann, Heath Rigby and Aaron Daniels combined for nine completions and 73 yards through the air.

Michael Jobe had eight tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Sam Lyons had seven tackles, and Brad Tipton also recovered a fumble.

Cavs overpower FR

Fort Recovery’s junior high football teams didn’t have much luck against the Coldwater Cavaliers Thursday. The eighth grade team lost 6-0, while the seventh grade team took a 37-6 pounding.

The lone touchdown for the seventh graders come on a 1-yard, third-quarter run by Toby Metzger.[[In-content Ad]]
