French club to have sidewalk cafe today

The Jay County High School French Club will have a sidewalk café on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. outside the south doors of the high school. The café will be in a French bistro setting and will feature croissants, crepes, éclairs, quiches and fruit tarts.

Summer concerts

The Dunkirk Beautification Committee will present the 2010 Summer Concert Series to be held at Webster Depot Park in Dunkirk. All concerts will be held on Saturdays from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and food and drinks will be served beginning at 6 p.m.

The first concert will be held Saturday and will feature the Chelsea House Orchestra from Chelsea, Michigan. Students from Chelsea High School will perform "Celtic with a Kick" music.

On June 19, the Trojan Band will perform 1950's, '60's and '70's music. For more information, visit www.TheTrojanBand.com.

On June 26, Jay Fox and the Bavarian Showtime Band will perform polka, waltz, big band, country, rock, bluegrass, Latin, ballads and semi-classical.

Reading program

The Summer Reading Program will begin June 14 at Jay County Public Library.

Adults, teens and kids may register for the program that will continue through July 24. To register, call (260) 726-7890 or visit the library at 315 N. Ship St. in Portland.

Minnetrista at JCPL

Minnetrista Theatre Preserves will perform "Habitat-tat-tat" on Monday, June 28, at 11 a.m. at Jay County Public Library.

Family program

Also the family program "Make a Mosaic Trivet" will be held on Tuesday, June 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Jay County Public Library.

Participants will need to bring their own broken tiles, plates, pottery or ceramic that includes flat pieces. Registration is required.

Art show

Applications are being accepted to display artwork at the Natural Beauty Art Show to be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on July 3 at Ouabache State Park.

First place

Derek Wilson, a former writer for the Ball State Daily News at Ball State University won first place in the 2010 National Society of Newspaper Columnists Contest.

John Grogan, the author of "Marley and Me," chose the winners out of 110 entries.

Derek is the son of Greg and Debbie Wilson, Daleville, and the grandson of Tom and Linda Hapner, Pennville.

Scholarships

The Portland Vocational Women's Club recently awarded two $300 scholarships to Jay County High School seniors:

Katie Clifton, the daughter of Rick and Kim Clifton and the granddaughter of club member LeVara Clifton.

Brad Horn, the son of Mark and Laurette Horn and the grandson of club member Alice Valentine.

Earns degrees

Two area students recently received degrees from Manchester College in North Manchester:

Joshua Atkinson, Portland, a Jay County High school graduate, earned a bachelor's degree in history with a concentration in language.

Daniel Haffner, Ridgeville, a graduate of Winchester Community High School, earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education mathematics.

Takes fifth

The Fort Recovery Agronomy Team recently placed fifth in the state by identifying weeds, seeds and insects and made fertilizer and herbicide recommendations.

The team is made up of members Michelle Brackman, Laura Braun, Andrea Lennartz, Melissa Lochtefeld, Amanda Pottkotter, Heather Pottkotter, Jodi Pottkotter and Samantha Schoenherr.

Dean's list

Laura Jane Vogler, Portland, was named to the dean's list at Anderson University for the spring semester.[[In-content Ad]]
