French club to host cafe (02/16/07)

The French Club at Jay County High School invites the public to its annual Mardi Gras Cafe on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the south hallway of the high school.

French food such as croissants, crepes, eclairs, quiches and fruit tarts will be available in a French bistro setting.

There will also be mask makintg and games for kids.

Library events

Story times will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. and Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Jay County Public Library, Portland.

Families are invited to attend family fun time on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Jay County Public Library in Portland. There will be puzzles, books, music and toys for children to share while conversation is shared by adults.

Poetry night

The Randolph County Art Association's seventh annual poetry night has been rescheduled for Wednesday in Union City.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. in the Historical Depot, near the railroad tracks on Howard Street. The cost is $2 for adults and students are free.

Donate pennies

Jay County High School students are collecting pennies for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients program from Feb. 26 to March 16.

Pennies for Patients raises funds to support blood cancer research and services for patients.

Bloomfield spellers

Fifth grader Randy Fortkamp took first place in the spelling bee at Bloomfield Elementary School. He is the son of Jim and Julie Fortkamp.

Fifth grader Abby Muhlenkamp took second place. She is the daughter of Vernon and Jill Muhlenkamp.

BSU graduates

The following Jay County students graduated from Ball State University during the fall semester of 2006.

Brenna Carroll, Portland, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of fine arts.

Earning bachelor of science degrees were Mindy Glassford, Dunkirk; Jennifer Huelskamp, Janelle Johnston, Ashley Stewart and Howard Wickelman, all of Portland.

Earning a master of science degree was Linda Wellman, Bryant.

Spring conference

Indiana Farm Bureau has planned its spring conference for March 9 and 10 at the Indianapolis Marriott East.

Early-bird sessions will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 9, and the conference will officially open at 1 p.m. There will be a banquet and bingo on Friday night.

Saturday's activities include workshops and speakers. Babysitting will be offered Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
