MUNCIE — Jay County’s freshman class is larger than the entire Muncie Southside Rebel team. So, it took advantage.

Three Patriot freshmen scored their first career wins Tuesday night as the Jay County girls swim team clobbered the short-handed Rebels 140-35. It was the first dual meet of the season for both squads.

“It was exciting tonight to see some of the new kids, the freshmen, get a win,” said JCHS coach Bev Arnold. “I kind of mixed up the lineup in hopes that that might happen, but you never know ... they could’ve had first-meet jitters.”

Debut wins went to Briann Saxman, Ivy Simons and Lauren Murrell. Fellow freshman Cori Vormohr and senior Lindsey Vesperry added two wins apiece as the Patriots won every event and swept the top three spots five times.

Saxman had to fight off junior teammate Amber Kelly in the 200-yard individual medley for her first win.

The freshman was first through the butterfly and backstroke, but Kelly pulled even in the breaststroke to make the race a battle down the stretch. Saxman pulled away slightly in the final 25 yards, edging Kelly by 1.01 seconds for the win in 2-minutes, 50.40 seconds. Kelci Reed completed the sweep in third place.

Simons and Murrell didn’t have the same challenge as they scored back-to-back wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. Simons picked up her victory by five seconds in 1:19.28, leading a sweep with Reed and Sandy Adkins. Murrell took the breaststroke by 10 seconds with time of 1:25.16.

Vormohr and Vesperry were the only Patriots to even score individual points at Saturday’s Norwell Invitational, but Arnold said the wins against Southside should be a big boost for the rest of the team.

“That should help them know that they can compete at the high school level,” said Arnold of the freshmen first-time victors. “They’re still a little bit timid and shy.

“We had some good times tonight, even some drops from Saturday. That’s impressive.”

Vesperry controlled the mid-distance freestyle events with a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle. She topped Simons by two seconds to win the 100 in 1:07.46 and took the 200 by 12 seconds with a time of 2:26.19.

Vormohr was a ridiculous five seconds ahead of everyone in the shortest race, the 50 freestyle. She finished in 26.67, followed by teammates Andrea Collins and Christa Castillo.

She also took an easy win in the 500 freestyle, lapping the entire field for the first time just prior to the 275-yard mark. She would lap the field a second time, finishing her 500 faster than the rest of the swimmers completed 400 yards, and finish in 5:52.35 to win by 1:30.

“Her work ethic is outstanding,” said Arnold of Vormohr, who broke the school’s individual medley record at Norwell. “It’s going to pull those that want to work at her level ... That’s exciting.

“We might not win a lot this year, but we’re going to start climbing and we’re going to start knocking on the door. We’ll get there ... especially if (they) want to work hard.”

Kelly led the Patriots’ other victory in the 100 butterfly. She was first in 1:21.28 followed by Maddie Fennig and Nikisha Imel.

Brittany Lewis led a diving sweep, edging freshman teammate April Acker 135.85-135.7. Lacey VanSkyock was third with 116.4.

Jay County also won all three relays.[[In-content Ad]]
