FRHS students honored (4/14/04)
Board recognizes FCCLA students
FORT RECOVERY — High school family consumer science students were honored Tuesday by school board members here for their recent success at a regional competition.
Seven Fort Recovery High School Family Career Community Leaders of America members reviewed their projects at Tuesday’s Fort Recovery School Board meeting that recently received a gold rating at the club’s regional competition.
FRHS family consumer science teacher and FCCLA sponsor Cheryl Perkeybile also added information about the student’s projects, which focused on children and family activities.
FCCLA members participated at the regional event in Minster, Ohio on March 8; three students will advance to the state competition on Tuesday, April 27 in Columbus, Ohio.
Board members presented these students with certificates for their accomplishments in FCCLA, a co-curricular vocational program.
In other business Tuesday, board members decided to pay off $159,000 owed on a permanent improvement loan by the May 1 deadline.
The loan is coming up for renewal, said Dennis Ontrop, treasurer for Fort Recovery schools.
He said this morning the board plans to use $70,000 in the corporation’s permanent improvement fund and borrow $89,000 from the general fund to pay off the loan by the May 1 deadline.
Ontrop told the board that paying the entire amount owed would save approximately $1,000 in interest.
This loan, for a total of $306,000, was used to build a bus barn to store 10 of the corporation’s buses and several other projects, Ontrop said.
Also Tuesday, the board voted to create supplemental contracts for a second cheerleading sponsor and a book club sponsor at the elementary school.
Fort Recovery Schools superintendent David Riel said that there have been two requests to add a second cheerleading sponsor. The current sponsor is in charge of both the middle and high school squads. This causes conflict on the nights when both middle and high school cheerleaders have events to attend and the sponsor can only be with one squad, Riel said.
This current sponsor is paid about $1,000 a year. Now the two sponsors will each be paid $540 a year.
Adding a new position for a book club sponsor was requested by three staff members, Riel reported.
Currently, only the middle school has a book club sponsor. The new club sponsor will be involved with students in grades three, four and five. The club will meet monthly after school.
The salary for this new position totals approximately $270 a year.
These positions will become effective next school year.
In other news Tuesday, the board:
•Accepted a quote from Harkum-Hyre Insurance Agency of Columbus, Ohio to provide property and fleet insurance coverage for the schools at an annual premium of $35,970.
This new policy will be effective April 19.
•Heard that 87 percent of parents attended the recent parent-teacher conferences at the Fort Recovery Middle School.
This number is down from 90 percent from the fall conferences, FRMS principal Ted Shuttleworth told the board.
•Heard Shuttleworth report on the success of the eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. from April 5 to 8.
“Their behavior was very, very good,” Shuttleworth said about the 77 students that went on the trip.
Nineteen chaperones also traveled with the students.
•Heard that graduation is planned for Sunday, May 23.
FRHS principal Ed Snyder told the board that the seniors’ last day of school is Friday, May 21. Graduation practice will be held that day at 11:50 a.m.
“We are encouraging them to finish strong,” Snyder said about the graduating seniors.
The high school academic awards banquet is set for Monday, May 3 in the FRHS auditeria, he said.
•Approved the FFA’s trip to the 2004 State FAA Convention in Columbus, Ohio from Thursday, April 29 to Saturday, May 1.
A total of 42 students — 27 boys and 15 girls — are planning to attend the convention.
•Heard that a form must now be filled out and returned to the high school by non-FRHS students that plan to attend the prom this year with FRHS students.
Snyder said that high school students that do not attend FRHS must have an administrator from their school fill out the form, and it must be returned to FRHS. Guests of students that do not attend a high school also will have to fill out a similar form, he said.
“It lets us know what class they are in,” Snyder added.
The prom is planned for Friday, May 7 at Romer’s Catering and Entertainment Facility in St. Henry, Ohio.
•Heard Fort Recovery Elementary School principal Nancy Knapke report on recent screenings of next school year’s kindergarten class.
Knapke said that 68 children were screened for next year’s class. A total of 65 of those students are expected to attend kindergarten classes in the 2004-05 school year.
•Were informed that the elementary school student council members received an honor student council excellence award from the National Association of Elementary School Principals for their outstanding community service, student leadership, citizenship and school spirit.
•Announced that their next meeting will be Tuesday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. (Ohio time) in FRHS.
•Heard Knapke report that 447 parent-teacher conferences at the elementary school were scheduled. Conferences were held on Tuesday, and are also scheduled for Monday, April 19.
•Accepted resignations for retirement from Cathy Etzler, FRMS teacher, and Carol Knapke, elementary school teacher, with both effective June 1; Mark Rutledge, FRHS guidance counselor, effective June 30; Elaine Romer, FRHS secretary, and Pat Sommer, data clerical assistance, both effective July 1.
•Accepted the following one-year certified personal contracts: Jennifer Grieshop, Cynthia Moorman, Kimberly Pohlman, Aaron Vaughn and Susan Post, all elementary teachers; Tracy Hein-Evers, part-time vocal music teacher; David Kaiser, elementary/middle school guidance; Curtis Hamrick, business teacher; Norman Leugers, industrial arts/technology teacher; and Jamie Smith, instrumental music teacher.
•Accepted the following two-year certified personal contracts: Amy Bihn, elementary teacher; Kristy Keller, part-time elementary teacher; Margie Dilworth, special education teacher; Janice Osterloh, mathematics teacher; and Kathy Schwieterman, science teacher.
•Accepted the following three-year certified personal contracts: Sue Ann Shuttleworth, elementary teacher; and Robyn Armstrong, science teacher.[[In-content Ad]]
