Sentenced for dealing
A Ridgeville man recently was sentenced to prison time for selling cocaine to a police informant.
James E. Lewis III, 36, pleaded guilty in Jay Circuit Court to dealing in cocaine, a class B felony. His guilty plea was accepted and he was sentenced June 17 to 12 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with two years suspended. He was given credit for time served since Dec. 18.
Lewis was ordered to pay $160 in court costs, a $500 drug and alcohol countermeasures fee and a $500 fine.
A charge of dealing in a schedule II controlled substance, a class B felony, was dismissed.
The drug deal took place on March 4, 2007.
Trial set
A Jay Circuit Court jury trial has been scheduled for a Portland man accused of drug possession.
Vincent T.C. Barker, 21, is facing a charge of possession of a controlled substance, a class C felony. His one-day jury trial is set to begin Sept. 5 at 8:30 a.m.
Portland police arrested him on a warrant on April 9. On April 1, he allegedly possessed an anti-anxiety medicine not prescribed to him within 1,000 feet of East Jay Middle School.
Charges dismissed
Two charges against a rural Geneva man recently were dismissed in Jay Circuit Court.
Marvin Foltz, 63, was facing four counts of child molesting, all class C felonies. Two of those charges were dismissed on June 13.
The charges were dismissed because they were filed more than five years after the crime allegedly occurred. The victim, who was 7 years old at the time, said the crime occurred between Jan. 1, 2000, and Jan. 1, 2001.
For the two remaining charges, Foltz is accused of fondling a Jay County girl between June 1 and Oct. 1, 2007, and on Jan. 1, 2008. The crimes allegedly occurred in Jay County. The girl was 7 and 8 years old when the crimes allegedly occurred.
Foltz was arrested Jan. 30 by Jay County police.
Sentenced in two
A Portland man recently was sentenced in Jay Superior Court in two separate cases.
In the first case, Joshua M. McCowan, 21, pleaded guilty to auto theft, a class D felony. He was sentenced June 13 to two years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with five days credit for time served.
He was fined $300 and ordered to pay $160 in court costs.
In another case, he was sentenced June 13 on a charge of battery resulting in bodily injury, a class D felony.
McCowan was sentenced to three years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with one year suspended and five days credit for time served. The sentences will be served concurrently.
He was ordered to pay $160 in court costs and $1,010 in restitution to the Jay County Sheriff's Department. He was placed on probation for one year.
A charge of criminal mischief was dismissed.
He was arrested Nov. 16 by Jay County police for stealing a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am belonging to a Portland resident. The theft occurred Nov. 15.
On Nov. 16, while was being arrested for auto theft, he kicked Jay County deputy John Hankins.
Sentenced for driving
A Portland man recently was sentenced in Jay Superior Court on a charge of driving as a habitual traffic offender, a class D felony.
Donald E. Stipp, 37, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced June 12 to 36 months in the Jay County Jail, with 24 months suspended and two days credit for time served.
The remaining sentence will be served on electronically monitored home detention.
He was ordered to pay $160.50 in court costs, and was placed on probation for 24 months. His driving privileges are forfeited for life.
A charge of driving a vehicle after forfeiture for life was dismissed.
He was arrested April 21, 2007, after he was pulled over by Portland police.
Sentenced for possession
A rural Bryant man recently was sentenced in Jay Superior Court on one case, and another case against him was dismissed.
Leland P. Runkel, 40, a former Hartford City resident, pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana, a class D felony.
As part of a plea agreement in this case, another possession of marijuana case was dismissed.
His guilty plea was accepted June 10 and he was sentenced to two years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with an additional two years for being declared a habitual substance offender.
He was given credit for 66 days served, and was ordered to pay $160 in court costs and a $200 drug abuse, prosecution, interdiction and correction fee. His driver's license, existing vehicle registrations and ability to register motor vehicles were each suspended for one year.
Charges of driving while intoxicated and driving while license suspended were dismissed.
He was arrested March 12, 2007, after he was pulled over by Jay County police for speeding. He had a bag of marijuana in his sock.
In the case, he was facing a charge of possession of marijuana, a class D felony. His case was dismissed June 10.
Runkle was arrested April 9. While being arrested on a warrant for his other case, he allegedly possessed a marijuana cigarette.
Sentenced for theft
A Portland man recently was sentenced to jail time for stealing copper from a Portland business.
Russell S. Hodge, 49, was sentenced on a charge of theft, a class D felony. His guilty plea was accepted June 11 in Jay Superior Court and he was sentenced to 18 months in the Jay County Jail, with 12 months suspended and two days credit for time served.
He will serve the remaining sentence on electronically monitored home detention. He was fined $100, ordered to pay $160 in court costs and pay $9,750 in restitution to Createc Corporation. He also was placed on probation for one year.
On May 19, 2007, he stole 20 copper cooling trees from Createc. Portland police arrested him on a warrant on June 3, 2007.
Pleads to nonsupport
A Dunkirk man recently pleaded guilty in Jay Superior Court to nonsupport of a dependent child, a class D felony.
Floyd Wheeler Jr., 46, pleaded guilty June 13. He is set to be sentenced July 2 at 11 a.m.
Dunkirk police arrested him on a warrant on June 20, 2007. As of Jan. 31, 2007, he failed to pay $6,684.17 in child support.
September sentencing
A Florida man is set to be sentenced in September on a class D felony charge.
Justin W. Stolz, 32, Casselbury, pleaded guilty June 12 to nonsupport of a dependent child, a class D felony. He is set to be sentenced in Jay Superior Court on Sept. 16 at 11 a.m.
As of March 2, 2007, he failed to pay $8,339 in child support. He was arrested July 9, 2007, on a warrant.

Eric A. Shultz, 25, was facing a charge of possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony. His case was dismissed June 10.
