Racing
A group of 16 area students and two South Adams High School teachers competed earlier this week in the Eighth Annual Super Mileage Challenge at Indiana Raceway Park in Indianapolis. The competition was designed for students to build cars that would get the best gas mileage possible.
The students’ two cars raced in two classes during the day. The local group placed 14th out of 28 competitors in the stock class with 371.36 miles per gallon. In the unlimited class — where students could make any car modifications they desired — the group landed a ninth place finish out of 11 competitors with 316.04 miles per gallon.
Students from Jay County, South Adams, Bellmont, Bluffton, Adams Central and Southern Wells High schools were part of the local team.
Meeting
A written set of rules and procedures for the Portland Planning Commission was adopted by its members at Thursday’s meeting.
The document outlines regulations for officers, meetings, public hearings, petitions, filing procedures, notice requirements and committees.
Formerly, the commission observed rules outlined in the city’s zoning ordinance.
Bill Milligan, Jay/ Portland Building and Planning administrator, told commission members that additional rules can be added.
Also Thursday, the commission appointed members Vicki Tague, Lee Newman, John Knipp and Bob McCreery to an ad hoc committee to review and revise the city’s zoning ordinance. The revised ordinance will become part of the city’s comprehensive plan.
The committee plans to meet to work on the ordinance then present the proposed revisions to the commission for approval at future meetings.
