CORRECTION
Information about The First Church of the Nazarene, Portland, was listed incorrectly on Thursday’s church pages of The Commercial Review.
Sunday evening service at the church, located at 920 S. Shank St., will be held at 6 p.m., with Pastor Fred Grenier preaching.
Museum open
The Museum of the Soldier, 510 E. Arch St., Portland, will be open in celebration of Memorial Day Monday. It will be open from noon to 5 p.m.
Admission is $2 for adults, and $1 for students and senior citizens. Admission is free for members and those 10 and younger.
GENEVA ACCIDENT
A Geneva toddler was injured Tuesday when he was stuck by a car driven by a rural Bryant man near Palmer Street in Geneva.
Trey A. Truex, 16 months, 295 Hale St., was transported by Adams County Emergency Medical Service, with minor facial injuries, following the 2:24 p.m. accident.
The driver of the car, James E. Jones, 21, 8808 North, 300 West, Bryant, told Geneva police he was backing a 1980 Chevrolet Caprice out of a garage, as the child approached the vehicle. He said he told the toddler to get away and saw him step away.
Jones then proceeded to back out of the drive until he hear a loud thud. He found the child under the car.
Jones told police no other adults were outside, and there was another small child in the yard at the time of the accident.
Damage to the vehicle, which is registered to Angela M. Truex, 160 Palmer St., Geneva, is estimated at less than $750.
STORM DAMAGE
During Thursday afternoon’s rain and hail storm in Dunkirk, a large tree fell on a parked van/truck on South Franklin Street, city police said.
Police said no one was injured but the van appeared to be a total loss. The vehicle was owned by Raymond Brisco, who was in the process of moving from Dunkirk to Celina, Ohio, police said.
CITY ACCIDENT
A rural Portland man was cited for failure to yield following a Thursday evening accident on Votaw Street in Portland
Dorwin W. Brandenburg, 77, 3101 West 500 South, told Portland police he was pulling out of the Shell gas station, on the south side of Votaw Street at 6:16 p.m., and did not see a 1998 Buick Regal headed west on Votaw Street, just west of Meridian Street.
Brandenburg’s 1989 Ford Bronco and the Buick, driven by Jacquelyn M. Baughman, 38, 707 W. High St., Portland, collided.
Estimated damage to both vehicles is $1,000 to $2,000.
COUNTY ACCIDENTS
A Redkey man’s vehicle hit a pole on county road 800 South at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, after he apparently fell asleep at the wheel.
Ernest J. Slaven, 42, 6289 West 800 South, told Jay County police he was eastbound, east of 700 West, when he apparently feel asleep.
His 1991 Chevrolet S-10 truck traveled off the south side of the roadway into a ditch. The truck then sideswiped a utility pole, and finally came to rest.
Slaven’s truck has an estimated damage of $1,000 to $2,500.
A vehicle driven by a Coldwater, Ohio, woman struck a deer this morning in Noble Township.
Charlene M. Findley, 30, 709 W. College St., told Jay County police she was westbound on Ind. 26, near county road 700 East at 5:45 a.m., when a deer ran into the roadway.
She was unable to avoid the collision, which caused $2,500 to $5,000 in estimated damage to her 2004 GMC Canyon.
THEFT
A wooden gate was reported stolen Thursday from a barn in Bryant.
Bernice Teeple, 3180 East 650 North, discovered the gate was missing at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. She said she believes it was taken sometime in the last several days.
The gate was large enough that it would require two people to carry it, Teeple said.
AREA COURTS
David M. Albers, 19, Portland, was fined $35 in Celina Municipal Court recently for a parking violation.
Ali Careno, Portland, was fined $224 in Bluffton City Court for speeding. In the same court, Ledford Harding, Dunkirk, was fined $25 for a seat belt violation.
