Eye injury
A rural Pennville man was injured in a single-vehicle accident just north of Bryant on Thursday evening.
Brian A. Jobe, 40, 5591 North Ind. 1, suffered a cut on his eye. He was transported by Jay Emergency Medical Service. Jobe was trapped in his 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt.
According to Jay County police, Jobe was driving south on U.S. 27, south of county road 800 North. He told police he fell asleep and his car went off the east side of the road and hit a utility pole. The vehicle then rolled and came to rest on its top.
The 6 p.m. accident caused damage to the car estimated at $10,000 to $25,000.
Light pole struck
A Portland woman hit a light pole at CrossRoads Financial Federal Credit Union in Portland Thursday evening and was cited after allegedly leaving the scene of the accident.
A report by Portland police said that Crystal L. Schuler, 45, 951 S. Bridge St., failed to clear a turn at the credit union, 1102 W. Votaw St., Portland, and hit a light pole at 5:03 p.m.
The police report said she then left the scene of the accident.
Schuler arrived at the Portland Police Department at 7:15 p.m. to report her car had been hit while at Wal-Mart. Police were able to match a piece of broken turn signal lens recovered at the credit union to her car. She admitted to leaving the scene of the accident.
An estimated $1,000 to $2,500 of damage was caused to the pole and the 1993 Buick Century Schuler was driving. The car is registered to Glen Wilhelm Jr. of 510 W. Water St., Portland. She was cited for leaving the scene of an accident, a misdemeanor.
Turning crash
A misjudged turn caused a collision Thursday evening at Meridian Street and North Street in Portland.
Terence W. Burgess, 52, 1321 Meadow Lane, Portland, was turning left onto North Street when his 1998 Ford Taurus collided with a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Sandra K. Shaver, 62, 4358 South 475 East, Portland. Burgess told police he thought he was clear to make the turn.
Damage to both vehicles was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000. Shaver's car was towed from the scene. Burgess was cited for failure to yield, an infraction.
Van vandalized
A van received damage Thursday night that included a broken window and damage to the hood.
Diana Allison and Kevin Walker, of 304 1/2 N. Meridian St. in Portland, reported hearing a window break at 11:20 p.m. Thursday. She came outside of her apartment to see the Chevy van had the middle window on the passenger side smashed. Walker told police he also saw a bottle of whiskey laying on the floor of the van.
The van is registered to Walker's boss, Jake Schwartz, 151 East 650 North, Bryant.
Walker came to the Portland Police Department this morning to report more damage to the van, including two scratches and five dents on the hood of the vehicle.
Controlled burn response
The Portland Fire Department responded to a controlled burn that got out of control Thursday.
Firefighters helped to tame a fire at 1749 North 200 East at 6:04 p.m. Thursday. One truck and eight firefighters responded to the call and were able to bring the burn back under control by 6:27 p.m.
The owner of the property could not be identified.
Meds, television stolen
A rural Redkey woman told police that someone stole several items from her home.
Telea Addington, 6408 South 1225 West, told Jay County police that some medication, a television, a DVD player and a cordless drill were stolen.
Addington said she discovered the theft at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Value of the stolen items was estimated at $2,800.
Money stolen
A rural Pennville man reported the theft of items from his home recently.
Therman Pack, 9461 West 350 North, told Jay County police that cash and jewelry were stolen from his house. Pack discovered the items when he came home.
He called police at 3:39 p.m. Tuesday.
Pack estimated value of the stolen items at $2,000.
Mailbox damaged
A rural Bryant woman discovered her mailbox was vandalized sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday.
Carolyn Journay, 5144 East 500 North, found her mailbox was destroyed. She called Jay County police at 10:21 a.m. Thursday.
Shed damaged
A Portland man's country property was vandalized between Sunday and Thursday, May 29.
Bob Osterfield's recreational property is on county road 100 South and one and a quarter mile east of U.S. 27. The storage shed was damaged with a hole in the side, he told Jay County police.
Blood drives
The American Red Cross will hold two blood drives in June as part of the statewide Indiana Fallen Officer Blood Drive campaign.
The first will be held June 11 from noon to 6 p.m. at the West Jay Community Center, 125 Hoover St., Dunkirk.
The second will be held June 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 204 E. Arch St., Portland.
The drives are held in memory of a police sergeant who died in the line of duty in 2001.
Power outage in Portland
A scattered power outage affected residents in Portland this morning at 6:39 a.m.
The outage was due to a transformer fuse.
The number of customers out was unknown for this particular outage.
As of 11:25 a.m., out of the total 583,000 customers of AEP in Indiana and Michigan, only 45 customers were without: one customer in Muncie, five in South Bend, and 29 in Fort Wayne.
"There are going to be outages around the system almost at all times. It could be because of animals getting in the lines, wind, auto accident, equipment failure," said Mike Brian, Corporate Communications Manager. "But, what we try to do is bring power back as fast as we can."[[In-content Ad]]
