POLE STRUCK

A school bus driven by a Portland man backed into a utility pole in Wayne Township on Thursday at 7:35 a.m.

Michael L. Ford, 57, 1880 East 100 South, told Jay County police he was backing out of a private driveway on county road 150 South, about 900 feet west of Blaine Pike, when he backed into a utility pole, owned by Jay County REMC.

There were 22 students on the bus at the time of the accident.

Damage to the 1992 International bus owned by the Jay School Corporation, 404 E. Arch St., Portland, was estimated between $750 and $1,000.

DEER ACCIDENT

A vehicle-deer collision involving a vehicle driven by a rural Portland woman occurred Sunday at 11:03 p.m. in Greene Township.

Janet F. Shauver, 46, 5444 West 200 South, told Jay County police she was driving east on county road 200 South, about 2,500 feet west of county road 400 West.

She said that the deer jumped into the passenger side of her 2001 Ford Explorer, causing between $1,000 and $2,500 in estimated damage.

CITY ACCIDENT

Vehicles driven by a Berne woman and a Portland woman collided at the intersection of Arch and Ship streets in Portland on Thursday at 4:48 p.m.

Sharon K. Haines, 62, 7445 South U.S. 27, Berne, was driving south on Ship Street and failed to see a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban eastbound on Arch Street driven by Marcella M. Macias, 24, 209 Oak St., Portland, according to a report by Portland police.

Haines drove into the intersection and collided with by Macias’s sport utility vehicle.

Damage to Macias’ Suburban, registered to Francisca Borrega, same address as driver, and Haines’ 1996 Chrysler New Yorker was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

Haines was cited by police for failure to yield.

MERCER ACCIDENTS

A Celina man and a Celina teen were involved in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Sharpsburg Road and Industrial Drive at the edge of Fort Recovery on Friday, Oct. 3.

Delmar F. Lewis Jr., 63, told police he stopped southbound in traffic because of construction equipment entering the road.

Samuel R. Sites, 17, failed to stop in time and collided with the rear of Lewis’ sport utility vehicle. The accident took place at 8 a.m.

Damage to both vehicles was described as minor.

Sites was cited for an assured clear distance violation.

In another accident, occurring on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. on Carthagena Road at Coldwater Creek Road, a Fort Recovery teenager swerved off the road to avoid a collision and drove into a cornfield.

Jacqueline Tobin, 19, 2573 Sawmill Road, Fort Recovery, swerved to avoid a collision with a vehicle driven by Ludwig Wuebker, 78, St. Henry, Ohio.

Wuebker told Mercer County police he stopped at the intersection and then drove into into the intersection, not seeing the vehicle driven by Tobin.

Tobin swerved off the right side of the road into a cornfield. Her car sustained moderate damage.

No damage was listed for Wuebker’s truck.[[In-content Ad]]
