CANCELED

A jury trial scheduled to begin in Jay Circuit Court on Tuesday, Sept. 16 has been canceled, court officials said Thursday.

Prospective jurors do not need to report for duty.

CAC MEETING

The Citizens Advisory Committee of the Jay County Solid Waste District will meet Monday at 4:30 p.m. at district headquarters, 5948 West Ind. 67, Portland.

Among the topics to be discussed are battery, fluorescent tube and mattress recycling, along with the upcoming county Toxaway Day on Saturday, Oct. 4. The meeting is open to the public.

DEER ACCIDENT

A pickup truck driven by a rural Portland man struck a deer in Bearcreek Township early Wednesday morning.

At 5:30 a.m. on county road 500 North, Ladge Raymond Gambill, 40, 2300 East 500 North, told Jay County police he was westbound, about 1,000 feet west of county road 150 East, when a deer ran into the road. A collision couldn’t be avoided.

Estimated damages to the 1988 Chevrolet pickup truck, registered also to Cherryl Gambill, same address as driver, were between $2,500 and $5,000.

AREA COURTS

A Fort Recovery man was sentenced in Celina Municipal Court recently after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated and blood alcohol content.

Bernard L. Lea, 62, 129 N. Wayne St., was sentenced to 12 days in jail to run concurrently with a sentence received from Mercer County Common Pleas Court and also had his driver’s license suspended for six months.

In another case, Lea pleaded no contest to a domestic violence charge and was sentenced to nine days in jail to run concurrently with his other sentences.

In the same court, Mitchell S. Stammen, 20, 2105 Sharpsburg Road, Fort Recovery, pleaded guilty to underage possession/consumption of alcohol and was fined $100 and court costs.

Also fined was William R. Hemmelgarn, 61, Portland, for a traffic signal violation. He was fined $23.50.

Fined in Winchester City Court were: Darrell A. Male, Portland, seat belt violation, $25; and Gregory A. Current, Redkey, driving with suspended driver’s license and speeding, $189.50.

Tracey Paxson, rural Bryant, was fined $95 in Bluffton City Court for speeding.[[In-content Ad]]
