FR's Stein narrowly misses state berth (05/27/04)

Local Roundup

An outstanding freshman season came to an end Wednesday, but only by a matter of inches.

Fort Recovery’s Holly Stein missed a trip to the state meet in her first season by fewer than four inches, placing fifth at the Piqua track regional Wednesday at 36 feet, 61/4 inches.

The top four individuals in each event earned a trip to the state meet at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus Friday and Saturday, June 4 and 5.

Stein was in fourth after the preliminary round, just one-quarter inch in front of Troy Christian’s Mary Weisenbarger at 36 feet, 41/4 inches. But, Weisenbarger jumped to second with her fourth throw (first in the finals) to drop Stein to fifth place.

With one throw to go Stein needed to surpass Allen East’s Jessica Gossard at 36 feet, 10 inches. Her final toss was a personal best, but came up 33/4 inches short of a state berth.

Fellow Indian freshman Vicki Roessner also ended her season at the Piqua regional. She was seventh in her heat in the 300-meter hurdles, and placed 12th overall in 50.49 seconds.

SA tops Jets

The South Adams baseball team closed its regular-season schedule in style Wednesday, traveling north to knock off the rival Adams Central Jets 4-2.

South Adams pushed the lead right back to three runs with a run in the top of the sixth, and the Jets scored once in the bottom of the frame for the final margin.

Justin Caffee went the distance for the win, allowing just a pair of unearned runs on nine hits. He struck out nine and walked one.

Leadoff hitter Kyle Neuenschwander paced the offense with a single, a run and an RBI. Caffee also had an RBI, a run and a steal.

Aaron Givens and Tyler Sprunger also had one RBI apiece.
