Fuller powers Jay in doubleheader

FORT WAYNE — Chance Fuller powered the Patriot offense while the pitching staff gave up just three runs in two games.
Fuller finished with five RBIs on Saturday as the Jay County High School baseball team rolled to victories of 10-1 and 5-2 over the host North Side Redskins.
JCHS (7-3-1) took control early, scoring six times in the first inning of game one. It trailed early in game two, but scored three times in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
In the opening game, Fuller had a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs. He added a triple, two RBIs and a run in the second.
Ty Huntsman limited North Side to one run on two hits while striking out three batters in game one. Dustin Selvey earned the game-two win as he gave up two runs — one earned — on three hits.

Golfers place sixth
GENEVA — Jay County finished sixth out of 11 teams at Saturday’s South Adams Invitational at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
The Patriots scored 372 to finish three strokes behind fifth-place Northeastern. The host Starfires were fourth at 361 while Shenandoah won by 21 strokes with a 319.
Evan Mathias set the pace for JCHS, recording all of his four pars on the front nine en route to an 88. Adam Alfont had four pars and the lone birdie of the day for the Patriots as he followed with a 92.
Justen Keller and Mitchel Rigby each came in at 96, and Dylan Friddle finished with a 99.

Cheerleaders announced
The Jay County High School cheerleading squads for the 2012-13 school year were announced following tryouts Friday.
JCHS will use one squad for the Indiana State Fair competition and the football season. Seniors making the squad were Makayla Jobe, Alexis Cook, Jenna Barber and Lauren Runkle.
Also on the squad will be juniors Ericka Reynolds, Kaitlyn Miller, Olivia Cash, Charis Beitler, Brea Burcham and Cydney Huey; sophomores Morgan Brown, Rhianon Mills, Bryttani Knight, Carli Ostrowski, Chelsea Russell, Alexis Murrell and Laurann Schoenlein; and freshmen Katie Witt, Mallory Marshall, Erica Swingley, Miranda Hibbard, Menausha VanSkyock, Sierra Trobridge and Madison Miller.
The group will be split into two squads — varsity and junior varsity — for the basketball season.

Indiana SELECT 2nd
FRANKLIN, Ohio — The Indiana SELECT fifth and sixth grade girls basketball team, which includes athletes from Jay, Randolph and Delaware Counties, placed second this weekend at the McDonald’s All American National Qualifier Tournament.
The squad advanced to the championship game before falling to Dayton Metro. Players on the team are Shelby Caldwell, Cassidy Qualls, Jordyn Barga, Maddy Lawrence, Avery West, Allison Hoening, Dawn Minnick and Peyton Bietry.
By finishing in second place, the team qualified for the Pre-McDonald’s All American National Tournament, which will be held June 8 through 11 in Dayton, Ohio.

Nichols takes third
MONTPELIER — Travis Nichols turned in the top finish among local drivers in Saturday’s action at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Nichols placed third in the Thunder Cars race with fellow Portland residents Steve Mills and Brian Baldauf in seventh and 15th respectively. Jamie Heiser and Cody Timmerman, both of Fort Recovery, were 11th and 12th respectively in the Super Streets race, and Jeff Baldauf, Portland, placed 18th.[[In-content Ad]]
