Garringer, Denney close season

Local roundup

KENDALLVILLE — Jay County’s girls golf season came to a close Saturday as Cara Garringer and Abby Denney competed in the regional tournament at Cobblestone Golf Course.
Garringer shot a 91, which was 14 strokes off the pace needed to advance to the state finals, and Denney finished at 95. Katie Sharp of champion East Noble was the regional champion with a 5-under-par 67, and Wawasee’s Krista Zurcher was the last individual state qualifier with a 77.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the state tournament.
Garringer parred two of her first three holes and finished with a 43 on the front nine. Denney bogeyed each of the first four, and then came up with pars on Nos. 5, 6, 8 and 9 for a 42.
But both players struggled on the 10th hole and 18th holes as they fell out of contention on the back nine. Garringer finished with six pars for a 91, and Denney had five for a 95.
“What an accomplishment to make it out, because not that many kids do that,” said JCHS coach Butch Gray. “The competition when they stepped up to this next level was a drastic change.
“We’re going to miss them. We’re going to miss those three, including Macey (Gerber), at the top next year. We’ve got some big shoes to fill.”
Garringer and Denney were the first Patriots to play in a regional since 2006, when Trisha Champ shot 77 at Cobblestone and fell just two strokes short of a state berth.
