Garringer, Hemmelgarn take titles

GARRETT — Kyle Garringer and Eric Hemmelgarn got a good tune-up in their final action before the sectional tournament.
Garringer and Hemmelgarn each won tournament titles Saturday as the Jay County High School wrestling team finished fifth out of 11 squads at the Garrett Invitational. East Noble won the event, followed by Leo, Bishop Dwenger, Northrop and the Patriots.
Garringer (195), who is undefeated and ranked fifth in the state, and Hemmelgarn (HWT), who is ranked seventh, each turned in perfect records on the way to their championships. Jesse Finnerty (145) also made it to the championship match as he finished in second place.
Adding third-place efforts for JCHS were Alex Abbott (113) and Zach Metcalf (160). Conner Ray (120) and Hunter Gillette (182) each placed fourth.

Fort takes 9th, 11th
WAPAKONETA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery boys swim team scored 73 points Saturday to finish ninth in a 17-team team field at Wapakoneta Family YMCA. The girls were 11th with 21 points.
Marshall Hull paced the Indian boys as he took third place in the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minutes, 2.21 seconds. He was also fourth in the 100 butterfly.
Cori Stone was the only Fort Recovery girl to finish in the top 10 as she posted a time of 2:28.25 for third place in the 200 individual medley. She added a seventh-place finish in the 500 freestyle.
Andy Gray was seventh for the Tribe boys in both the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
On Friday, the boys team finished second in a five-team field at Miami County YMCA while the girls were third. Stone, Hull and Gray each won a pair of individual events.

SA grapplers roll
PONETO — South Adams’ wrestling team racked up six pins Friday and also benefited from five forfeits as it dominated the host Southern Wells Raiders 70-12.
Gage Conner led the way for the Starfires as he finished off his 152-pound match in just 1 minute, 18 seconds. Shea Pyle added a pin in 1:33 at 160 pounds.
Sawyer Miller (113), who is ranked sixth in the state, Eric Pimentel (126), Matt Nussbaum (132) and Klayton Hinshaw (182) each added second-period pins. L.J. Moser (120) picked up his victory by a 13-3 major decision.

Tribe freshmen win
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery freshman girls basketball team picked up its second win of the year Saturday, 43-23 over the visiting Wayne Trace Raiders.
Kendra Siefring scored 14 points to lead the Indians (2-4), who had a 10-point lead after the first quarter. Mikayla Post, Chelsea Timmerman and Kelsey Evers added six points apiece.

EJMS goes 2-1
DECATUR — East Jay Middle School’s wrestling team posted a 2-1 record Saturday with wins of 50-46 over Muncie Wilson and 90-24 over Blackhawk Christian at the Bellmont Quad. It fell 81-30 to the host Braves.
Davis Anderson (80), Kaimen Sanders (95), Brent Englehardt (115) and Austin Harter (200) all finished at 3-0 for the Chiefs. Adding 2-1 records were Derek Bryan (75), Dustin Bricker (100), Ivan Hemmelgarn (110), Brandon Resler (125), Gaven Hare (165) and Jacob Ferguson (175).[[In-content Ad]]
