Girls golf roundup

HAGERSTOWN - In two of the first three invitationals this year, Cara Garringer shot a career-best 96. She shattered that mark Tuesday.

The host Tigers won easily with a total of 345, and Franklin County was third with a 411. Alesia Melton of Hagerstown earned medalist honors with an 80.

After parring two of the final three holes to cap a front-nine 49, Garringer carried the momentum to the back side. She parred the 10th and 12th holes, and then bogied three of the next four.

The sophomore put up her fifth par of the day on the 364-yard, par-4 17th hole, and then tapped in for her lone birdie on the 351-yard, par-4 18th. Her 1-under-par effort on the final two holes gave her a career-best nine-hole score of 42 on the back nine as she finished tied for fourth overall with Natalee Short of Hagerstown.

Abby Denney, also a sophomore, broke 100 for the Patriots as well. She parred three of the first four holes and also played even on the 15th and 17th for a career-best 91.
