Garringer victorious in Greco state tourney (04/30/07)

Kyle Garringer made it two state championships Saturday. He'll wrestle for a third this weekend.

Garringer earned his second state title this spring, taking the top spot in the 140-pound novice division at the Greco state tournament. He finished with a 3-0 record.

He also won the folkstyle tournament earlier this year, and will try for the freestyle title Saturday.

Drake Meska (schoolboy - 105) and Casey Kenney (cadet - 105) each added second-place finishes with 3-1 records. Caleb Culy (cadet - 130) placed third at 3-2.

Patriots 8th at invite

WINCHESTER - The Jay County boys golf team finished in the middle of the pack behind the two standouts at Saturday's Winchester Invitational.

Richmond and Park Tudor far outdistanced the remainder of the 12-team field with scores of 289 and 308 respectively. The host Golden Falcons were a distant third at 343, and the Patriots placed eighth - five behind seventh-place Northeastern, and six ahead of ninth-place Union City.

Gray Suman broke Adam Gray's stranglehold on the top spot, leading the team with an 85. He put together a string of five pars in six holes at the turn, including the first three of the back nine. He finished his round by playing even on the 345-yard, par-4 18th for his ninth par of the day.

Gray was next as he finished with four pars in a round of 89. He also had the team's lone birdie on the 353-yard, par-4 third.

They were followed by Justen Moser, who had four of his six pars on the back nine for a 90. Jonathon Fennig and Chris Shannon rounded out the team score with matching 90s.

Knittle, Muhlenkamp 4th

DEKALB - The DeKalb Invitational proved as difficult as ever for the Patriot girls tennis team Saturday.

Jay County managed just two victories with the No. 2 doubles pair of Megan Knittle and Cindy Muhlenkamp turning in the best finish in fourth place.

Knittle and Muhlenkamp won their opening-round match over Kristin Ridgway and Heather Dulworth of Blackford by a 6-1, 6-1 score, guaranteeing them a top-four finish. They lost to Floyd Central's Emma LaDuke and Jennifer VanWinkle 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinal round, and dropped 6-1, 6-1 to the host Barons' Megan Culler and Brittany Hanes 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation final.

At No. 1 singles Carissa Wilkins lost her opener 6-0, 6-1 to Alisha Anthony of Triton before bouncing back for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Samantha Rhoton of Blackford. She went on to fall 6-3, 6-1 to Abigail Enteman of Floyd Central in the fifth-place match.

Jenna Valentine at No. 2 singles, Megan Adams at No. 3 singles and Jessica Muhlenkamp and Tiffani Bickel at No. 1 doubles each finished the day 0-2.[[In-content Ad]]
