Garringer's pin lifts JCHS wrestlers

WINCHESTER - The match was left in the hands of a freshman.
Jay County High School's wrestling team trailed by a single point Thursday with one bout remaining, with Kyle Garringer representing the Patriots. The 189-pounder delivered in a big way, pinning Eric Sauser of the Winchester Golden Falcons to lift JCHS to a 42-37 victory.
Garringer's pin, which took just 1 minute, 38 seconds, was the last of seven for Jay County (9-5). Two others came in the first period, with Eric Beougher (160) topping Dyllan Holcomb in 1:42, and Chase Louck (125) defeating Eric Hershburger in 1:49.
Dyllan Derrickson (140), Heng Hong (152) and Matt James (215) added pins in the second period. Drake Meska (130) finished his match against Travis Dolk in 4:47.
Junior varsity victories came from Raistlin Rice (125), Preston Overholser (130), Dylan Cope (160), Luke Wiemer (160) and Lucas Boyer (HWT).
Tankers fall to Norwell
OSSIAN - The boys swim team stayed close, but fell to 0-4 with a 97-86 loss to the host Norwell Knights. The girls team also fell, 116-67.
Wiley Young, Neal Fennig and Aaron Hudson each turned in a pair of victories for the JCHS boys.
Young led a one-two finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.34 seconds with Luke Holcomb in second place, and Hudson was first in the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 6.4 seconds ahead of Jared Valentine. Young added a victory in the 200 individual medley in 2:28.93, and Hudson won the 100 butterfly at 1:01.47.
Fennig's wins came in 24.61 in the 50 freestyle and 1:01.54 in the 100 backstroke.
Megan Taylor turned in the lone victory for the girls team. She broke the 200-point mark with a season-high score of 200.5 points in diving.
EJMS girls roll
The East Jay Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team held visiting Bluffton without a first-half field goal on the way to a 38-7 win. The seventh graders cruised to a 34-16 victory.
Katlin Petro scored 14 points to lead the eighth grade Chiefs, who led 10-0 after the first quarter. Katie Aker added 10 points.
Catherine Dunn totaled 14 points for the EJMS seventh team (4-0), pulled away from Bluffton with a 16-2 fourth quarter. Lucy Hemmelgarn followed with eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
