HONORED

Pacesetter Bank of Portland was recently named Pacesetter Bank Branch of the Year for 2004.

To celebrate, the Portland bank will host a party for its customers on Friday, Feb. 4. Cake and punch will be served to everyone who stops by.

“We certainly congratulate Natalie McIntire who manages the office as well as all the other members of our team,” president Ted A. Leas said in a press release. “There are a number of measurable areas of performance that we track to determine this honor, and the competition between our offices is quite intense.”

Pacesetter Bank operates six offices in Jay, Randolph, Blackford and Grant counties.

NAMED

A Decatur car dealer was recently chosen as Large Business of the Year by the Decatur Chamber of Commerce.

Courtesy Motors was selected because of its consistent success. The company opened in 1977. By 1980, it was one of the first dealerships in the country to sell the full line of General Motors vehicles. In 2003, it added the Ford line.

The company is owned by Jim Kelley of Fort Wayne and employs 55 people.

JOINED

Lutheran Health Network of Fort Wayne has joined the Encore Health Network.

Encore is one of the largest Preferred Provider Organizations in Indiana and serves Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan. Network participants include more than 16,000 physicians and 165 hospitals.

Lutheran Health Network consists of eight hospitals, including Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

SETTLEMENT

American Electric Power Co. has agreed to pay $81 million to three federal agencies to settle a gas-trading case.

The company is accused of falsely reporting natural gas trading data and trying to manipulate natural gas markets from 2000 to 2002.

Of the settlement, $30 million will go to the Justice Department, another $30 million will go to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and $21 million will go to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The company was put on probation for 15 months.

Gregory Mocek, the CFTC’s head of enforcement, told The Wall Street Journal his agency’s investigation showed the alleged false reporting and market manipulation “were an addiction for a number of traders” at AEP.

A subsidiary of AEP, Indiana Michigan Power, provides electricity in parts of Jay, Adams and Blackford counties.

INCREASE

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has predicted that its January sales for U.S. stores will increase 2 percent compared to sales in January of 2004.

The company had a rough December and had to increase its discounting. Post-holiday sales were good. Food sales in January were higher than general merchandise sales. East Coast sales were the strongest performers, the company told The Wall Street Journal this week.

PROFIT SURGE

Fourth quarter profits look promising for Norfolk Southern Corp.

The railroad company reported a net income of $264 million, which is five times the previous year’s income of $52 million. The company told The Wall Street Journal that an improving economy is responsible for the large profit increase. The large demand for coal in China and the Pacific Rim has also benefited the company.

HIRED

Dynamic Resource Group of Berne has hired a new advertising account manager.

Samson Long of Vancouver was chosen for the position. He has worked as a contract marketing consultant and was the director of marketing for The Better Mousetrap People.

The Canadian graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology with a degree in professional marketing and sales.

He also attended Kwantlan University. He plans to move from his home to Berne in the near future.

DRG publishes 14 special interest magazines.

MILES-LONG DONATION

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Indiana is asking frequent fliers to contribute their miles to children with life-threatening medical conditions.

When volunteers ask a child for his or her favorite wish, the child often wants to go somewhere.

Most major airlines, including American, America West, British Airways, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and US Air, have programs which allow frequent fliers to donate their unused miles.

“A contribution of frequent flier miles to the Make-A-Wish Foundation is one of the most direct ways to help make a difference in the life of a child with a life-threatening medical condition,” Make-A-Wish executive director Joni Thompson said in a press release.

To donate miles, call (877) 872-2756.[[In-content Ad]]
