Giant Spin-In to be held at fairgrounds (03/08/06)

The Giant Spin-In will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the 4-H Building at the Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland.

On Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m., a class will be held on Needlefelting on Fabric and another on Creating a Shadow Box with Textiles.

On Friday, Beginning Spinning, Colonial Rughooking and Beginning Needlefelting classes will be given from 9 a.m. to noon. Colonial Rughooking, Blending Fibers for Spinning and Felt Hats classes will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Needlefelting on Fabric, Navajo Spindling and Basic Stained Glass classes will begin at 6 p.m.

Saturday will offer an Off Loom Weaving Techniques for Beginners, Beginning Spinning and Advanced Needlefelting, all from 9 a.m. to noon. Basic Plying, Tapestry/Rug Weaving on Frame Looms and Advanced Needlefelting classes will be given from 1 to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is necessary.

Home School educational day will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To make reservations, call Gyneth or Jennifer at (260) 726-3366 or (877) 726-4481. Sack lunches are available for $3.

There will be vendors of all kinds of fibers, including wool, mohair, angora, flax, alpaca, cotton, silk and buffalo. Visitors may bring raw wool or other fibers to be washed and processed by the Wooly Knob Fiber Mill.

Food will be provided by the 4-H Rabbit Club and entertainment will be provided throughout the day.

Library events

The Jay County Public Library announces March events.

An after-school special will be Friday, March 10, from 2:45 to 4 p.m. for kindergarten through fifth grade students. A snack will be served, stories shared and a craft completed. Registration is required. For more information or to register, call the library at (260) 726-7890.

Story times for infants and older are Monday, March 13 and 20 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, March 14 and 21 at 1 p.m. Four or five books will be read aloud, followed by a craft. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please call ahead if bringing a large group.

Toddler activity time will be Thursday, March 9 and 23 at 9:30 a.m. There will be stories, toys, music and instruments to share. Infants and toddlers are welcome with an adult.

History lecture

A lecture about the local Native American and Great Lakes tribal history and culture will be given Saturday, March 11, at 7 p.m. at the Jay County Historical Museum, Portland.

Dr. Malea Powell will present the lecture “Andrew J. Blackbird” a glimpse at an American Indian Intellectual. It is the second lecture in a three-party series. The museum is located at 903 E. Main St.

Life skill winners

Bloomfield Elementary School has announced the “Win With Life Skills” winners for the month of February. The skill spotlighted last month was patience.

Students recognized by McDonald’s and Coca-Cola Bottling are Kendra Fortkamp, Emerson Futrell, Esther A. Graber, Josh Haver, Troy Homan, Amber Huelskamp, Gerald Muhlenkamp, Conner Ray, Miranda Reinhart, Spencer Reinhart, Henry Schwartz, Daniel Schwartzentruber and Mikayla Wellman.

Graduated

Area students graduated from Ball State University during the 2005 fall semester.

Earning a bachelor of science degree were Christopher Banser, Kendra Van Skyock and Hillary Warner, all of Dunkirk. Earning a bachelor of arts degree was Laura Huffman, Dunkirk. Dedra Mahon, Dunkirk, earned a master of science degree. Julie Fortkamp, Bryant, earned a master of arts degree. Jessica Wagner, Ridgeville, earned a bachelor of science degree.

Joins sorority

Melissa J. Muhlenkamp, Bryant, is serving as a member of Wilmington (Ohio) College’s Order of Omega and is vice president of the sorority Delta Theta Sigma Lil’ Sis.

She is a 2002 graduate of Jay County High School and is a senior majoring in agriculture and education.

Volunteers needed

Camp Minnetrista (Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie) is looking for volunteers for teaching aids, administrative helpers, game leaders and lunch monitors.
