Gilbert inducted into Phi Beta Kappa (2/13/03)
Taking note
John Gilbert continues to add to his long list of honors at Indiana University.
Gilbert, a 2000 graduate of Jay County High School, has been inducted into the Gamma of Indiana Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic Greek-letter society in existence.
Just last month, Gilbert was named drum major of the Indiana University Marching Hundred for the 2004 season.
A Wells Scholar at IU, he is pursuing a degree in Spanish and economics and completing his certificate in the liberal arts and management program. He plans to graduate in December.
Gilbert is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, the Marching Hundred, the Big Red Basketball Band, and the Crabb Band.
The Society of Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary. The IU chapter was established in 1911.
John is the son of John and Susann Gilbert, Portland.
YOUTH PROGRAMMING
Activities for young people continue to fill the calendar at Jay County Public Library.
Children up to grade six can still register to participate in the February Reading Program, “An Arctic Adventure.” Registration forms must be turned in by Saturday, Feb. 14.
Activities and reading to earn parts of a snowman must be completed by Monday, March 1, and turned in to the library by that date.
“Chill Out and Read” a program for grades seven through 12 is also going on. Participants must register by Feb. 14 and complete activities by March 1.
A meeting of the library’s teen advisory board is set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
All students in grades seven through 12 are welcome to attend.

ORATORICAL WINNERS
Snow-delayed competition in the Optimist Oratorical Contest has been completed at East Elementary School.
Erin Hunt, a fifth-grader and daughter of Michael and Jan Hunt, placed first in the girls’ division.
Ben Brandt, a sixth-grader and son of Bill and Beth Brandt, placed first in the boys’ division.
Alternates were Lacey Randolph, a sixth-grader and daughter of Jimmie and Jani Randolph, and Josh Mills, a sixth-grader and son of Steve and Julie Mills.
The winners will go on to compete in the county competition, set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Pennville Elementary School.
STUDENTS OF MONTH
Students of the month have been named at West Jay Middle School.
In sixth grade, the student of the month is Wil Masters, son of Mike and Debbie Masters. In seventh grade, the student of the month is Kelci Reed, daughter of Jeannie Reed. And in eighth grade, the student of the month is Alexis Skeens, daughter of Jimmy and Christi Skeens.
