Girls State delegates picked (5/14/03)

Taking Note

The Pennville American Legion Auxiliary has chosen two Jay County High School teens for Hoosier Girls State.

The delegate is Elizabeth Audra Coleman, 17, a junior. She is the vice president of the French Club, a member of J.C. Alive, JCL, Campus Life, Honor Society and the Key Club.

She attends Pennville United Methodist Church and is employed by The Whirl in Redkey. She recently traveled to Europe with the French and German classes for spring break.

Coleman is the daughter of GySgt. Jerry and Marla Coleman, 9082 West 500 North, Pennville.

The alternate is Kendra Hutchison, daughter of David Hutchison, Pennville and Lisa Bunch, Portland.

She is a junior at Jay County High School and is employed at McDonald’s.

BLOOD DRIVE

Jay County will join 345 other communities around the country to help the Red Cross achieve its goal of 3,000,000 blood donations nationwide during the Save A Life Tour.

Jay County’s goal is to receive 547 donations with special recognition for higher participation.

The Tour is a six-month nationwide campaign to boost public education of the nation’s critically low blood supply and to encourage people to donate blood regularly.

The results of the campaign are being tracked nationally.

A blood drive is scheduled for Friday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 204 E. Arch St., Portland.

Donors must be 17 years old, weigh 110 lbs. and be in general good health. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call (800) GIVE-LIFE (800-448-3543).

NURSE HONORED

A local registered nurse was honored at an awards banquet May 7, for 20 years of service.

Karen S. Myers, 211 W. High St., Portland, received a 20-year service pin from Thomas Miller, CEO of Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Myers has worked as an RN in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit during her entire career.

IRIS SHOW

The Iris Growers of Eastern Indiana will host its annual Iris Show on Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, from noon to 4 p.m. both days, at the Minnetrista Cultural Center, 1200 N. Minnetrista Parkway, Muncie.

The public is invited to attend and place entries in the show. Entries need to be made on Saturday, May 24, between 8-10 a.m. with judging taking place from 10 a.m. to noon. Sunday is for display only.

All exhibits must have been grown and entered in person by the exhibitor whose name appears on the entry tag. All entries need the exhibitors name and the type of iris (TB, IB, etc.). Exhibits cannot be removed prior to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

MINNETRISTA

Two workshops are taking place at Minnetrista Cultural Center at the end of May.

An adult handmade soap workshop will take place Saturday, May 24, from 9-11:30 a.m. The workshop will teach participants how to make soap for both face and body using the right ingredients and fragrances.

Cost is $20 and the registration deadline is Saturday, May 17.

Also, families can enjoy Electro Fishing on Friday, May 30, at 3:30 p.m. Scientists from the Muncie Bureau of Water Quality will take fish samples from the White River. Electricity is used to stun the fish and team members count the number of fish and identify the species.

The program is free. Registration deadline for the program is Friday, May 23.
