'Gizmos' coming to Minnetrista (06/16/06)

A Garden of Gizmos will be at Minnetrista Cultural Center through Sept. 10. The science theme exhibit is for children to experience hands-on activities such as cranks and pulleys, music and movies, zoetropes and kaleidoscopes, painted murals, motors, sliding knobs and more.

Minnetrista Cultural Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is $4 for children and students, $6 for seniors and $7 for adults. For more information, call (765) 282-4848 or visit www.minnetrista.net.

Fort FFA

Fort Recovery FFA members placed sixth in the state in ag engineering. Members competing were Austin Burkhardt, Craig Sutter, Scott Will, Adam Pottkotter, Chris Dues, Kyle Nietfeld, Ben Tobe, Kyle Brockman, Brad Jutte, Joel Bey, Bruce Shoen, Jeremy Siegrist and Eric Lochtefeld.

Fort FFA members also placed 14th in the state in farm business management. Members competing were Lindsay Sudhoff, Beth Fortkamp, Tyler Huelskamp, Mary Will, Rachel Will and Beth Lennartz.

Receives scholarship

Jay County High School graduate Erica Murray, Portland, has received a $1,000 scholarship from The Burger King Scholars Program. The Burger King/McLamore Foundation works with high school principals and counselors to choose students according to grade point average, work experience, financial need, activities and community service.

Boy’s State

Lucas Smith, 17, son of Sam and Josephine Smith, has been chosen to attend Hoosier Boys State at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Smith will be a senior at Jay County High School and is involved in student council, plays snare drum in the Patriot band and was in cross country and track and field. He works at Portland Pizza Hut and attends The Rock Church.

Graduates from school

Trenton A. Bash, son of Camille Elick, Portland, and Dr. Robert Bash Jr., Dallas, Texas, graduated cum laude recently from Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, Texas.

He received a Presidential Scholarship and an honors’ scholarship from Wabash College, Crawfordsville, where he will be studying in the fall.

Teacher honors

Annemarie McClung, a French teacher at Jay County High School, has been chosen by the Indiana-AATF to be the 2006 Indiana French Teacher of the Year at the secondary level.

Because of her numerous accomplishments and efforts as a French teacher and promoter of the French language and culture, McClung’s colleagues felt she was deserving of this honor.

Through a process of evaluation, she was selected out of all the other nominees by the I-AATF executive board for this year’s honor.

She will receive this honor officially at the I-AATF annual meeting which takes place during the fall conference Saturday, Nov. 4.

Dean’s list

Three Portland residents made the dean’s list at Anderson University for the 2005-06 spring semester.

They were Lauren Elizabeth Budde, Rachel Kathryn McKee and Nicole Marie VanSkyock.

Named to list

Sara Ronald, daughter of Jack and Connie Ronald, Portland, has been named to the dean’s list in the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences for the spring semester.

Named to dean’s list

Laci Liggett was named to the spring 2006 Dean’s List at Taylor University, where she is a senior majoring in elementary education. She is a graduate of Jay County High School and is the daughter of Kirk and Bonnie Liggett, Portland.

On Purdue list

Matthew Knoth, son of Richard and Priscilla Knoth, Bryant, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Purdue University, West Lafayette.[[In-content Ad]]
