Golden Eagles halt South Adams (10/09/07)

MARION - An outstanding season for the Starfires came to an abrupt end Monday.

The South Adams High School girls soccer team got a tough break in the sectional draw and dropped out of the tournament at Marion Monday night with a 3-1 opening-round loss to the Oak Hill Golden Eagles.

The Starfires finished at 11-5-1 while Oak Hill (13-0-2) advances to play Norwell in Thursday's semifinal round.

Oak Hill's sophomore scoring leader Courtney Moses put her team on top midway through the first half as she outran the defense to the game's first score. The Golden Eagles scored again in the final five minutes of the first half, and added a goal with 20:28 left in the second for a 3-1 lead.

Kinsey Lengerich, who had a shot rattle off the crossbar early in the contest, turned in South Adams' only score at the 16:02 mark of the second half. Her tally came off a corner kick by Maddie Moore.

JC JV football rolls

CONNERSVILLE - The Jay County junior varsity football team got some big special teams plays Monday to help propel it to a 38-20 victory over the Connersville Spartans.

The Patriots came up with a pair of blocked punts, one of which was recovered in the end zone by Drew Locke for a touchdown. They got another special teams score when Michael Daniels returned a kickoff for six points.

Alex Langenkamp tossed a pair of touchdown passes, one each to Devayn Huntsman and Cody Bullard. Ben Vance added a TD on the ground, and JCHS was 4-for-5 on two-point conversion attempts.

Flyers flatten Fort JV

FORT RECOVERY - The Marion Local Flyers put up three first-quarter touchdowns Saturday as they topped Fort Recovery's junior varsity football team 48-6.

Nate Keller turned in the only touchdown for the Indians with a 65-yard kickoff return. The team is now 1-6 on the season.

Four finish first

Athletes from Portland's Judan Judo competed in tournament action in Whitetown this weekend, with four finishing in first place.

Casey Kenney, Kelsi Bostic, Nathan Daniels and Zack Mays all took top honors in their divisions. Adding second-place efforts were Jimmy Miller and Brianna Miller, and in third place was Toshi Miller.

In action Sept. 22 at New Castle, first place awards went to Kenney, Heath Alexander, Heng Hong, Adam Haffner, Drake Meska, Brianna Miller, Toshi Miller and Jimmy Miller. Lindsey Myers, Amanda Buell, Adam Wilhelm and Tori Schuler all placed second.[[In-content Ad]]
