Focusing on education

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, a month dedicated to educating consumers about the need to assure that their hearing is healthy. Hearing Aid Outlet in Portland is joining with the Better Hearing Institute in this effort.

Baby boomers - those born between 1947 and 1964 - may be particularly susceptible to hearing loss because of their lifelong exposure to loud music and other noises, according to Dan Ahrens, a hearing health professional in Portland.

For more information contact Ahrens at (260) 726-7346.

To close

A Decatur construction company specializing in bridge building expects to close in July after 60 years in business.

Baker & Schultz Inc. was over-whelmed by the need to comply with state and federal bridge-building rules, company President John Schultz said this week in a news release to the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

The heavy highway construction company was too small to keep up with the changing regulations, he said.

Baker & Schultz has been the builder of several bridges in Jay County, and was in charge of moving an old iron bridge from Knox Township and replacing it over the Salamonie River near the Weiler-Wilson Park.

Schultz said most of the company's 21 employees found work with Primco Inc., a Fort Wayne construction company that also builds bridges. About 15 former workers will join Primco, said Schultz, who is a Decatur city councilman and is running as a Democrat for the mayor's position.

Named officer

Ryan H. Vannatter, former assistant vice-president of Old National Bank in Portland, has joined STAR's Muncie Broadway banking center as banking center officer.

With 10 years of banking experience from Old National, he was formerly employed with XPLEX Extreme Competition Park in Portland.

Vannatter earned his bachelor of science degree in accounting from Ball State University.

STAR Financial operates 43 banking centers throughout Indiana.

Celebrates one year

Embarq, the fourth largest communications company in the U.S., is celebrating its first year as a stand alone, publicly-held company.

Since its inception May 17, 2006, the company offers local and long distance voice, data, wireless, high speed Internet and entertainment services.

To help mark the milestone, employees are engaging in a variety of internal celebrations. Externally, the company will kick off a nationwide food drive. Food will be collected in about 100 of the company's major work sites.

Over the past five years, Portland district employees have donated more than 7,000 pounds of food and equivalent cash to Jay County food banks. The food bank beneficiary this year will be Community and Family services.
