Gray earns all-conference honors (05/13/08)

Local roundup

CONNERSVILLE - Adam Gray walked away with all-conference honors. But it wasn't the kind of day the Patriots had hoped for.

Willowbrook proved a difficult site for the Jay County High School boys golf team, which posted its worst 18-hole round of the season at the Connersville country club. It shot a 373, finishing 30 strokes behind the Olympic Athletic Conference champion host Spartans.

Anderson Highland was six strokes back of Connersville in second place, and Muncie Southside was last at 417. Austin Stagman of Highland was the medalist with an 82.

Gray finished fourth to earn all-OAC honors as he shot an 85. His lone birdie of the day came on the 482-yard, par-5 sixth hole. He had three pars on the front nine and three on the back.

Adam Horn also had six pars as he followed Gray with a 90, and Fennig was the only other Patriot to record a birdie as he finished at 99. Chase Wellman had four pars and shot 99, and Justen Moser finished at 102.

Patriots draw Ole Miss

MARION - The Jay County girls tennis has won just once since April 17. To win a sectional title, it will need to win three times in three days.

The Patriots drew the long road Monday and will open the sctional tournament at Marion against Mississinewa Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The winner of that match will advance to Friday's semifinal round against six-time defending champion Marion at 4:30 p.m. The other semifinal match will have Blackford meeting Madison-Grant Friday, and the winners will advance to Saturday's championship round at 10 a.m.

Jay County has not played Mississinewa this season. Against other sectional opponents it defeated Blackford 3-2 and Madison-Grant 5-0, but lost 4-1 to Marion.

Stars last of three

ANDREWS - The South Adams boys golf team finished more than 20 strokes off the pace Monday, shooting a 193 to place third out of three teams at Etna Acres Golf Club.

Southwood finished first with a 167, and Eastbrook was second just two strokes back.

Landyn Waugh turned in the best round for the Starfires with a 43. Mark Farris had a 47, and Thurman Pursley followed with a 49.

Zack Sharp completed the team score with a 54, and Ryan Moser had a 58.
