HARTFORD CITY — Adam Gray put together another solid round Thursday, leading the Jay County boys golf team to a 181-192 victory over the Blackford Bruins.

Gray opened with a par, but was 4-over after four holes. He came back with pars on four of the final five to earn match medalist honors with a 41.

Gray Suman, who opened with back-to-back pars, was just two strokes back with a 43. They were joined by Josh Hall (47), James Brosher (50) and C.J. Comer (52).

The Patriot junior varsity team scored a 196-234 victory over Blackford. Aaron Daniels led the effort with a 44.

Error-free softball wins

The Patriots scored five times in the fifth inning and had no errors in defeating the Mississinewa Indians softball team 6-3 Thursday.

Jay County, which won its third in a row to improve to 7-7, trailed 2-1 through four innings before grabbing the lead for good in the fifth. They had four consecutive hits, followed by a walk and two more hits in the rally.

Amber Champ and Trisha Champ powered the offense as they each had a double as one of their two hits. Amber Champ scored twice and drove in a run, and Trisha Champ had two RBIs and a run scored.

Chelsea DeBoy and Morgan Locke each finished with a hit, a run and an RBI, and Shae Keller doubled and scored once.

Keller, now 6-5, got the win as she gave up the three runs on five hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Bears top JV baseball

PARKER CITY — The offense for the Monroe Central Golden Bears kept working while Jay County’s JV baseball team cooled over the final four innings in an 8-5 defeat.

The teams were tied at four after three innings, but Monroe Central (3-0) posted single tallies in the fourth and fifth to take the lead for good. Jay County (4-5) scored once in the top of the sixth, but the Golden Bears responded with two more runs in the bottom of the final margin.

Justin Mann, Derek Barnett and Phil Powell each pitched in the defeat. Three of Monroe Central’s eight runs were unearned.

R.J. Fuller went 2-for-3 with a double and a run to pace the Patriot offense. Lance VanSkyock doubled and scored a run.[[In-content Ad]]
