Gray shoots 1-over at Winchester (04/25/06)
JCHS roundup
WINCHESTER — A season-best round from Adam Gray wasn’t enough to lift the Jay County boys golf team Monday.
Gray notched by far his best total of the year, shooting a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine at Winchester Golf Course. But the Patriots (175) still finished behind Monroe Central (164) and the host Golden Falcons (170).
After bogeys on each of the first two holes, Gray caught fire with pars on each of the next six. He finished off his round with a birdie on the 145-yard, par-3 ninth.
The freshman finished one stroke behind match medalist Shane Ruble of Monroe Central.
The next best score for Jay County came from Gray Suman who had his lone par on the 458-yard fifth hole on the way to a 45. Chris Shannon birdied the 388-yard, par-4 fifth and shot 46, and James Brosher also finished with a 46.
Justen Moser had a 47, and Josh Hall shot 49.
Baseball falls in 8th
MONROE — For the second straight game the Jay County baseball team let a lead get away.
The Patriots were up 7-3 against Anderson Highland Saturday before giving up five runs in the bottom of the seventh, the final three on a walk-off home run. They led 3-1 Monday only to have the Adams Central Jets score twice in the bottom of the seventh and once in the bottom of the eight to swipe a 4-3 win.
Josh Atkinson took the defeat, allowing four runs — three earned — on nine hits and two walks. He struck out 10 in 71/3 innings.
Josh Selvey went 2-for-3 to lead the Jay County offense. He had a double, a run and an RBI.
Tony McCowan had a pair of hits, and Michael Jobe singled in two runs.
