Grief camp scheduled for July
Taking Note
State of the Heart Hospice will present its annual Camp BEARable for youth ages six to 15 who are dealing with grief and loss. The camp will be held July 13 to 15 at the Spiritual Center at Maria Stein (Ohio).
Anyone wanting to attend the camp does not have to be affiliated with hospice. Applications are available at www.stateoftheheartcare.org or at the office at 1237 W. Votaw St. in Portland. For more information, call Marlene Black at (800) 417-7535 or email [email protected].
Boys State
Two Jay County High School students recently attended Hoosier Boys State at Trine University in Angola.
Alexander Dunn and Brockton Miller, both of Portland, attended the event with the theme “A Week to Shape a Lifetime.” They heard an inspirational speech from Hall of Fame football coach Lou Holtz and met other local and state leaders and learned about Indiana’s democratic form of government and the organization of political parties.
Concert series
The Dunkirk Beautification Committee is once again sponsoring free concerts this summer at Webster-Depot Park in Dunkirk.
Jay County Community Band with clowns Buttnz and Bowz will perform on Saturday at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available.
Library news
Activities continue as part of the summer reading program “Dream Big: Read” at Jay County Public Library. Night Games will be held Monday, July 2, at 11 a.m.; A sand art craft class will be Friday, July 6, at 2 p.m.; Animals of the Night will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 9; Night Snacks, a program for teens, will be Wednesday, July 11, at 6:30 p.m. for those in sixth to 12th grade and a sheep magnet craft class will be Friday, July 13, at 2 p.m. The deadline for all reading logs is Saturday, July 14, and the swim party is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 21, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Beginner’s Internet: Senior Style will be held Friday, July 6, from 10 a.m. until noon at Jay County Public Library. The class is for those 55 and older to learn to use a mouse, navigate a webpage and surf the web.
A Cool Couponing class will be held Tuesday, July 10, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Jay County Public Library. Gather with other coupon clippers to swap coupons, trade tips and tricks of the trade.
Dean’s lists
Lee Haggenjos, Portland, was named to the dean’s list at Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters for the spring 2012 semester.
Two area students were named to the dean’s list for the spring quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute.
Jacob Schmidt, a senior majoring in computer science and computer engineering. He is the son of Gary and Diane Schmidt, Portland.
Clayton Eley, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering. He is the son of Todd Eley and Paula Miller of Portland.
