Grocery store planned in Dunkirk (01/13/07)

Business roundup

A new grocery and variety store are coming to the Todd Opera House building, 208 S. Main St., downtown Dunkirk.

Bitz and Pieces owner Frances Mooney recently attended a Dunkirk Area Chamber of Commerce meeting, shortly after purchasing the Todd building.

She discussed her short and long range plans for the building as well as her goal of providing a grocery store for the community.

Food stamps, Women Infant Children (WIC) vouchers and some credit cards including VISA will be accepted.

The store will provide delivery service to customers, if requested.

Dunkirk Chamber president John Faulkner acknowledged that the community has missed having a full service grocery store, adding, "This is a big plus for the community."

The building dates back to 1883, and Mooney said she wants to keep it as historically intact as she can.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for the near future.

Monda to return

Tony Monda, who led the early marketing efforts of Workhorse Custom Chassis in Union City, including the launch of its groundbreaking W22 motor home chassis, has returned to Workhorse as its new vice-president of RV sales and marketing.

Monda takes over the position from Bob Wert, who retired last month after spearheading the development and launch of the new Workhorse UFO rear-engine chassis.

Monda previously served as Workhorse director of RV marketing before leaving in 2003 to pursue a leadership position with Haulmark Industries, Inc., the leading manufacturer of specialty enclosed trailers.

Monda joined Workhorse during its start-up phase in 1999 after a 20-year career in sales and marketing for Safety-Kleen Corp.

New structure

Charles Isch, president and CEO of First Bank of Berne, has announced that shareholders had unanimously voted for conversion to a Sub-S Corporation status and that the bank has established an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).

According to Isch, under the ESOP, employees will soon be collectively one of the largest shareholders of First Berne Financial Corporation, the holding company for the bank.

He also said that the S-Corporation status will keep the bank competitive and will help the bank to remain an independent, locally-owned community bank.

Board chairman, David Baumgartner, said that recent tax law changes now allow up to 100 shareholders in an S-type corporation.

The bank currently has locations in Adams, Jay, and Wells counties in Indiana, and plans an opening in the spring of one in Van Wert, Ohio.

Earns accreditation

Decatur Open MRI, located in Decatur, has been awarded a three-term of accreditation in magnetic resonance imaging as a result of a recent survey by the American College of radiology.

ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs for focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology as well as the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Accepts offer

Cindy Gardner, the Edward Jones branch office administrator in Portland, has accepted an invitation to increase her limited partnership holdings in The Jones Financial Cos., the holding company for the St. Louis-based financial services firm.

Under the current partnership offering, 12,000 associates received initial limited partnership offerings or were invited to increase their existing ownership in the firm.

Gardner, a native of Winchester, joined Edward Jones in 1999.

Earns award

Dave "James" Evans, a technician with Ken Kunkle Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Cadillac in Portland, has been named one of nine November award winners nationwide in the GM TAC Case Closing Recognition Program.

Through the program, trained GM GoodWrench technicians provide TAC case closing information through GM DealerWorld.

For his efforts he was presented a $100 award through the GM Superstore.

Widman featured

Portland native Zach Widman is featured in the January/February issue of Outdoor Indiana in a story titled, "Clothing and Fabrics."

Widman, a buyer for J.L. Waters outdoors store in Bloomington, and the son of Dale and Ruth Ann Widman, Portland, says fabrics are so effective that they can mean the difference between life and death in extreme conditions.

In the story written by Marty Benson, with photos by Ben Shadley, Widman explained that some new fabrics provide comfortable all-weather protection that natural garments and most conventional manmade materials can't.

The most recent general advance, Widman said, is the soft shell, that has dominated the industry for the past few years.

New product

Old National Bank, which has a branch in Portland, has announced a new product that will simplify the deposit process for area businesses. ONB Express Deposit will eliminate unnecessary delays and streamline the steps taken to prepare and make deposits.

With a PC, an Internet connection, a check scanner and Old National Bank's Express Deposit software a business can get started. Checks that need to be deposited are endorsed and added to create a deposit total, which is entered into the software.

The checks are then scanned and the software verifies the deposit total to the scanned checks.

Once the transaction is in balance, it is submitted electronically via a secure connection to ONB allowing the customers to make a deposit without ever visiting the bank.

Clinic purchased

The Fort Recovery Veterinary Center has been purchased by the Coldwater Veterinary Clinic, it was announced this week.

The clinic will be in operation as usual, but there will now be four additional doctors rotating through the clinic Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dr. Bret Rochette, a partner in the purchase said Thursday that Dr. Jim Barman, who had been at the Fort Recovery clinic for several years, has left the practice.

However, Dr. Kim Forthofer will remain and be assisted by Rochette, Dr. Rick Slavik, Dr. Dan Hellwarth, and Dr. Urb Seger.

Rochette said a veterinarian would staff the clinic on a full-time basis while another doctor from the firm would be attending to farm animals.[[In-content Ad]]
