Groff finishes 48th at Troy regional (10/27/03)

Fort Recovery senior Jason Groff can be proud of the way he finished his career. He placed 48th in the regional cross country meet at Troy Saturday.

Swimmers 4th at Ball State

The Jay County Winter Swim Team placed fourth with 910 points at the Ball State Fall Invitational Saturday.

Three Rivers of Fort Wayne won with 2002 points, Delaware (Muncie) was second and Cardinal (Muncie) placed third.

Cori Vormohr was the top swimmer for Jay County, placing second in the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke in the female open division. She was third in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley.

In his first competitive meet Levi Hummel took second in the 8-and-younger boys 25-yard breaststroke. He was also third in the 25-yard butterfly.

Wiley Young added third-place finishes in the 9-10-year-old boys 50-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. Sok Vormohr was third in the 8-and-under boys backstroke, and Steve Kelly took third in the 11-12-year-old boys individual medley.

Jay County also picked up several top-three finishes in relay events, with Michaela Long, Laura Bowen, Whitney Stipp and Kiley Lipps placing second in the 9-10-year-old girls 200-yard freestyle and third in the 200-yard medley relay. Caitlin Mark, Alyssa Gair, Sophie Bader and Annie Vormohr were third in the 8-and-younger 100-yard medley relay and 100-yard freestyle relay, and the team of Rachel Osterholt, Kelci Reed, Briann Saxman and Vormohr was third in the open 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay.

Firebirds second

The Jay County Firebirds under-14 soccer team finished their season well with a second-place finish at the Great Celina Area Fall Classic this weekend.

The Firebirds (7-7-1) lost their opening-round game to champion Elida 3-0, but rallied for a 5-0 win over Wapakoneta and a 6-2 win over Riverdale.

Dustin Fox led the victory over Wapakoneta with two goals. Brad Horn, Patrick Johnson and Trey Dunn each had one.

Horn also picked up an assist, and Derek Bartlett had 10 saves.

Fox was even better against Riverdale, scoring five goals in that contest. Horn had one goal.

Bartlett finished with six saves, and Chase Ainsworth had four saves. Bartlett also had eight saves in the loss to Elida.

Basketball league

Randolph County YMCA has several openings in its Sunday afternoon basketball league.
