Gulley leaving JCHS position (08/01/2008)

By By RAY COONEY-

A little more than a year after Jeremy Gulley picked up his first principal's job, he will move on to another.

Gulley was hired Wednesday evening by Huntington County Community School Corporation to be principal at Huntington North High School. He had been principal at Jay County, which is less than three weeks away from the start of the 2008-09 school year, since July 7, 2007.

He replaces Ken Kline, who left HNHS in early July to become superintendent of Blackford County Schools. Rick Reed, principal of Salamonie School in Warren, has served has interim principal for the last two weeks.

"I always say that it's normal for administrators to try to accumulate as diverse an experience as they can in the profession of school leadership," said Gulley, who was approved by the HNCSC board by a unanimous vote.

"There were opportunities of professional growth that Huntington North offered that were professionally important for me to experience."

At HNHS, Gulley will work with three assistant principals as well as an athletics director. Jay County has an assistant principal/athletics director, Phil Ford, and an assistant principal/dean of students, Chad Dodd.

Huntington North, which like JCHS serves an entire county, has nearly 2,000 students compared to about 1,200 at Jay County. Gulley said the larger school size and the diverse curriculum would be a couple of the challenges of his new job.

"I know Mr. (Tracey) Shafer was looking for somebody with some strong educational leadership and saw that in Mr. Gulley," said HCCSC assistant superintendent for business and classified staff Dave McKee, speaking on behalf of superintendent Shafer, who was out of the office Thursday and today. "In the process of checking references, it became very clear that he would bring the ability ... to set a vision and express that to staff and students. We have a high regard for his integrity and character."

McKee said the job was posted during the first full week of July, with interviews beginning July 17. Gulley, who said he found out about the job through a direct mailing, was chosen from a group of three finalists.

His contract with Huntington North will take him through June of 2011 at a salary of $88,000 per year. He made $73,000 in his year as principal at JCHS.

"It was a decision that positively impacted my family, with three kids to put through college," said Gulley. "That is something a father has to consider.

"It came fairly suddenly. It's a process that unfolded quickly. When opportunities of that kind come along that will benefit my family, they are opportunities that one needs to take advantage of."

Jay School Corporation superintendent Tim Long said that while the school board has not yet accepted Gulley's resignation, plans are being formed to fill the vacancy. Gulley's last day at JCHS will be Friday, Aug. 8, and he will begin work at Huntington North on Monday, Aug. 11.

"I do anticipate that we will accept Mr. Gulley's resignation (at the school board meeting) Monday night," said Long. "He's just done a wonderful job for us and we appreciate the service he's given Jay County. He's a fine, fine young man and is going to be a great administrator in his career.

"He's a been a good friend to Jay County schools."

Among the options for the school board, Long said, are to look for a new principal or fill the position with an interim principal.

"Certainly any staff member that would be licensed at the high school level would be an option," said Long, confirming that both former principal and current assistant superintendent Wood Barwick and assistant principal/athletics director Phil Ford would fit that description.

He did not speculate on a timeline for a decision, saying that the situation would be clearer after Monday's meeting.

Gulley began his tenure with Jay Schools as a JCHS U.S. History teacher in 1996. He also taught history at West Jay Middle School, served as assistant principal at East Jay Middle School and was the JCHS assistant principal/dean of students before taking over the principal's job from Barwick in 2007.

"My excitement for that which awaits me can not helped but be tempered by the lingering sadness with my resignation," said Gulley, a Blackford High School graduate. "What I feel is a new day has recently dawned in this corporation in terms of its climate and progress. It really does give me personal satisfaction that I've worked with so many great administrators, teachers, parents and students.

"Our kids in this corporation are getting a first-rate education by the many hearts and hands of our educators."
