MUNCIE/HARTFORD CITY — On the Chinese calendar, 2005 is the year of the rooster. Saturday was the day of the Eagles.

The Delta Eagles denied a pair of Jay County Patriot three-peat attempts as they won both the sectional gymnastics and boys basketball championships.

During the day, Delta edged the Patriots for sectional gymnastics title at Muncie Central by a 103.85-103.175. The scores were season bests for both teams.

DHS coach and Jay County native Brad Farber said he had expected a second place finish, but “I was hoping for first,” said his wife and co-coach Julie. “I’ve been hoping for it all year. That was our goal from the beginning. Our goal before our first meet was break 100 and win sectional. And they did it. We’re going to celebrate.”

In the evening the Eagle boys used a dominating defensive effort to stop Jay County 41-25 in the Class 3A sectional boys basketball final at Blackford.

“It’s just fantastic,” said Delta coach Paul Keller. “This is my 20th year of varsity coaching and this is only the sixth time I’ve been able to do this. I know how precious these are.”

Both Jay County teams had won back-to-back sectional championships, as had the girls basketball team which lost in its sectional championship game a few weeks ago to Elwood. This year marks the first since 1999 that the Patriots did not win a sectional title in any winter sport.

The gymnastics victory gave Delta its first sectional title in that sport since 1989. The boys basketball team won its last championship in 2002 en route to a state title.

The Eagle boys advance to the NorthWood regional where they will play Class 3A No. 2 Bellmont (23-2) in the first of two regional semifinal games Saturday at 10 a.m. The host Braves won their championship game 60-54 over Leo.

Delta and Jay County both move on to regional action in gymnastics, as does Huntington North (97.1), as the top three teams and top six individuals from each sectional move on. They will compete at Huntington North Friday at 6 p.m., where they will be joined by Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (114.125), Fort Wayne Northrop (109.65), Fort Wayne Snider (102.10) and the top six individuals from the Fort Wayne Concordia sectional.

Both Delta and Jay County had outstanding days of gymnastics, with each team far surpassing its previous best score of the season.

The Eagles took the win by scoring nearly 4.5 points higher than at any other meet this year. Their previous high score was a 99.4 in its regular-season win over Jay County.

The Patriots’ previous best was a 101.95.

“I think that’s all explained at beam,” said JCHS coach Kristin Millspaugh of the defeat. “Two falls would have made the difference. Delta had three no-fall beam routines. That’s the difference right there.”

The Patriots had a cushion of just less than a point going into the final rotation, which featured them on the balance beam and Delta on the floor exercise.

The Eagles put up scores of 8.475 by Sara Fry, 8.825 by Emily Carter and 9.1 by Kelli Chriswell, leaving Jay County in need of clean beam routines. But, they didn’t come.

Freshman Erika Hunt managed a no-fall routine for an 8.0, which placed her sixth. And, though senior Lacey Grider (8.05) and junior Hannah Williams (8.7) placed fifth and second respectively, they both suffered a fall. Each fall is an automatic 0.5 deduction.

Those missing points left Jay County well behind on the beam, scoring just 24.75 points to Delta’s 26.00. The Eagles finished just ahead on the uneven parallel bars 25.9-25.7, while the Patriots won the floor (26.525-26.4) and vault (26.2-25.55).

“We usually have four or five no falls,” said Brad Farber of his team’s beam effort. “I just told the girls to do their best. If you do your best you’re going to get rewarded. That’s what I kept telling them.”

Really, the meet featured great efforts by both squads as they stood out among the nine-team sectional field. But, only Delta could leave with the trophy.

“They’re very disappointed, and the seniors were kind of heart-broken I think,” said Millspaugh. “This was going to be the first time that had happened in school history for us to win three in a row.”

Jay County seemed to be in position for that third straight crown, especially after outstanding scores on the bars.

Williams racked up by far her best number of the season, taking first place on the bars with a 9.5. That score is second best in school history.

Senior Makenzie Knight came up big as well, scoring a personal-best 8.15 for sixth place. Sophomore Lacey Thornburg added an 8.05, leaving the Patriots just barely behind Delta in the event and giving them a solid lead before the beam took it away.

“I was very impressed,” said Millspaugh of Williams’ bars. “I didn’t expect it to be that high of a nine, but I thought she would be in the nines. That’s the first bar routine she’s done all season that was fluid from the beginning to end, stuck the dismount. That’s definitely the best bar routine she’s done all year.”

In addition to her bars title, Williams also successfully defended her floor exercise title as she won for the third straight season with a 9.3. She tied with senior teammate Melissa Fifer for second on the vault with an 8.95.

She finished ahead of Chriswell for the all-around title for the second straight year, this time by a count of 36.45-36.25. Carter (34.175) and Fry (33.425) were third and fifth respectively, and Hunt placed sixth (32.575).

Sophomore Kristin Brown added a sixth-place 8.7 on the floor for the Patriots.

The only individual event winner not from Jay County or Delta was Angie Baker, who took the vault title with a 9.35. Blackford’s Laura Borgenheimer was the only athlete outside of the top three teams to advance as she placed sixth on the vault.[[In-content Ad]]
