Heitkamp leads Fort Recovery at regional

TROY, Ohio - The Fort Recovery High School girls cross country team closed its season Saturday, placing last in the 16-team field at the Division III regional meet.

The Indians, who were running without three of their top five runners because of injuries, scored 420 points to finish 78 points behind 15th-place Cincinnati Christian. Defending state champion No. 1 Minster won the meet with 86 points followed by No. 3 Spencerville (102), West Liberty-Salem (117) and No. 9 Ashland Crestview (121).

The top four teams and top 16 individuals earned state berths.

Sophomore Nicole Heitkamp paced Fort Recovery, which was 13th last season, as she finished 69th with a time of 22 minutes, 8.93 seconds. Attica Seneca East's Brittany Stockmast won the regional title in 18:57, and Maria Dahlinghaus of Minster took the final state qualifying spot in 20:21.

Alexis Sutter placed 100th for the Indians in 23:07 followed by Samantha Tobe (102nd - 23:10), Christen Wendel (109th - 23:33) and Abby Sudhoff (117th - 24:48). Joining them were Mariah Koester (119th - 25:10) and Abby Huelskamp (123rd - 25:59).

FR gridders fall

DELPHOS, Ohio - With senior quarterback Greg Kahlig out of the lineup, the Fort Recovery football team suffered a 62-0 loss Friday to the Division VI No. 1 St. John's Blue Jays.

St. John's (10-0, 8-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) scored four second-quarter touchdowns for a 42-0 lead at halftime, and had two running backs clear the 100-yard mark. Blake Williams ran 13 times for 102 yards and three TDs to lead the Blue Jays, and Jordan Leininger added 101 yards and two TDs.

The Indians (3-7, 2-6 MAC) managed just 60 yards of total offense without Kahlig, who missed the game with an illness. In his place Shane Brunswick went 5-of-16 passing for 21 yards, and Craig Tobe caught two passes for seven yards.

Perry Hull ran the ball seven times for 22 yards.

Bader, Vormohr lead JC

FORT WAYNE - Alex Bader and Anne Vormohr paced the Jay County Winter Swim Team Sunday as it competed in the Fort Wayne Aquatics Fall Classic.

Bader and Vormohr finished as high-point swimmers in the 9-10-year-old and 11-12-year-old girls divisions respectively. Both swam the 100-yard freestyle in less than a minute, with Bader finishing first in eight out of 10 events and Vormohr in seven.

Sophomore Bader added a pair of victories in the 11-12-year-old girls division, and James Keen was first in the 1-12-year-old boys 200 freestyle.

Vormohr, Sophie Bader, Ashley Mark and Cori Stone qualified for the state meet with their victory in the 11-12-year-old girls medley relay. Carley Stone added a pair of second-place efforts, and Eliza Bader was third in one event.[[In-content Ad]]
