Heritage Festival set for weekend (09/26/06)

The Jay County Historical Museum, 903 E. Main Street, Portland, will be the site of the Fourth Annual Jay County Heritage Festival this Saturday and Sunday.
Buckeye and Hollow Bones from the Pioneer Building at the Indiana State Fair will entertain on Saturday, as well as Voyageurs Ancient Fife and Drum Corps from Lafayette.
Kettle cooked ham and beans will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
"Tragedy, Trains, Truth and Tale," stories of African-American slaves Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, will be presented by mother-daughter team of Virginia Wesley and Annamaria Crider on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Kettle cooked chili will be served Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Other attractions include kids' pumpkin painting and candle dipping, Native American and Civil War camps, horse-drawn wagon rides, early style show, crafters and artisans, storytellers and musicians.
Footlong hotdogs, funnel cakes, ice cream Sundae bar and caramel apple slices will also be available both days.
Admission to the festival and the museum is free.
The festival is sponsored by the historical society, The Portland Foundation and Regional Arts Partners including Arts Place Inc., the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
Fitness class
The Jay Community Center is providing a free fitness class each Wednesday at 10 a.m. The Senior Sneakers is for senior citizens age 55 and older to gain strength, flexibility, balance and mobility.

The Jay County Public Library in Portland will offer a jewelry making class on Saturday from 10 until 11 a.m. The cost is $3 for materials and registration is required.

Learn to Crochet, a two-part class will begin Tuesday, Oct. 3, and continue Tuesday, Oct. 10, both at 6:30 p.m. Bring a skein of 4-ply yarn and a size G or H hook. Registration is required.

Mystery of the Queen's Jewels will be Monday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m. The program requires player participation to solve the whodunit mystery and you may dress as the character you portray. Registration is required.

Internet for Beginners for adults will be held Thursday, Oct. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 to 11 a.m.

In honor of the library building celebrating its 10th anniversary, a contest will be held to guess the combined number of years of service the 15 full and part time employees have worked at JCPL. The staff member with the most senority was hired in 1969 and the most recent in 2005. Submit your guesses to the library or email at [email protected]. Entries are due by Oct. 14, and a prize will be given to the winner with the closest guess.
Watch for more information on the upcoming Teen Book Week to be held Oct. 15 through 21 and Boo-rific Halloween Show on Oct. 23.
