Heritage rolls over Starfires (12/08/2008)

Local rounup

BERNE - A third straight win was a possibility as the Starfires trailed by just three at halftime. But that hope fell apart quickly.

The Heritage Patriots shut out the South Adams High School girls basketball team 16-0 in the third quarter on the way to handing it a 41-18 defeat Saturday night.

The Starfires (3-4), who had topped Bluffton and Muncie Burris in their previous two games, have not won three in a row since the 2002-03 season.

Ashton Morgan and Tara Beitler each scored six points for South Adams, which managed just five in the entire second half. Jaci Liechty added five points.

Caylen White led Heritage to its first victory of the season with nine points. Sarah Knefelkamp and Courtney Faulstick each added six points for the Patriots (1-5).

Bailee Green scored four points for the SAHS junior varsity team in a 41-6 loss to Heritage.

Keen, Stone lead JC

FORT WAYNE - James Keen and Cori Stone led the Jay County Winter Swim Team as it competed this weekend in the TRAC Holly Daze Splash.

Keen was the top overall performer for Jay County, placing second in both the 11-12-year-old 50-yard backstroke and 50 freestyle. He was third in three events.

Stone was the runner-up in the 9-10-year-old girls 100 butterfly and 50 butterfly. She was third in the 200 freestyle.

Sophie Bader turned in the only other second-place finish for Jay County. Katy Smeltzer, Cady Farlow and Alex Bader each finished third in at least one event.

SA 8th falls in 1st

DECATUR - Host Bellmont was too much for South Adams Middle School's eighth grade girls basketball team Saturday, eliminating the Starfires 42-27 in the first round of the Adams County Tournament.

Tori Smith paced SAMS with nine points, and Kara DeLong followed with eight points and five rebounds. Kristen Muselman added six points and five boards, and Bryanna Graat also grabbed five rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
