JCHS wrestling
INDIANAPOLIS — Jay County’s Kurtis Hess fell just one win short of standing on the state podium.
Hess (140) lost his first-round match 5-0 to Portage’s Dan Zemlick at the IHSAA state wrestling tournament Friday night at Conseco Fieldhouse to end his season. He finished the year at 26-7.
The junior, who had finished second in sectional action, third at the regional and fourth at the semi-state, was the first Patriot to reach the state tournament since 1999.
Hess needed to top the fourth-ranked Zemlick (38-3), the Merrillville semi-state champion, in order to finish in the top eighth in the state and earn a medal.[[In-content Ad]]
